Security Services Worker, Campus Security

Position Overview
Campus Security is currently seeking three (3) Full-time Regular Security Services Workers.
Campus Security operates 24 hours per day on a year round basis. Employees are required to work rotating 12 hour shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Hours balance out to 40 hours per week. Employees may be required to work extended hours. Special duty and overtime shifts are frequently available.
Employees report directly to the on shift supervisor. Employees are part of a team, however are required to work on their own for most of their shift. Employees will deal with complex issues where professional judgement and discretionary decision making will have a high impact at both individual and institutional levels. Employees are required to understand and work within the operational guidelines of the Security Department and the University of Calgary. Employees experience a very dynamic work environment with high stress factors, year round weather conditions, and moderate physical demands. Work volume is unpredictable. Tasks range from routine to highly critical. (Employees are first responders to all critical incidents). Employees will be in constant contact with the University community and will advise and provide support to students, staff, and visitors on Security and Safety matters.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Direct and assist emergency personnel as required.
• Provide building access as required.
• Identify potential infrastructure emergencies and initiate appropriate after hours response of University personnel as required. (Flood, structural damage, building systems)
• Initiate and maintain close working relationships with external agencies (Police, Fire, EMS)
• Provide specialized training assistance to other University departments as requested (Residence, Den Staff, Daycare, First Aid, AED).
• Provide 24 hour emergency contact for staff and students involved in international travel.
• Respond to and investigate all activated alarms (fire, fire trouble, ammonia, chlorine, burglary, hold-up, panic, access, intrusion, tamper, door)
• Develop, maintain, present and promote Security programs (Safewalk, Robbery Prevention, Bike Safety, ADAPT, CPTED Audits, Security alerts, ).
• Provide a 24 hour point of contact on behalf of the University Campus Community.
• Respond to reports of hazardous or unsafe conditions.
• Take responsibility for own personal growth and development, health and fitness
• Provide assistance and direction to staff, faculty, students, and visitors.
• Provide effective 24 hour mobile, foot, and bike patrol for University buildings and grounds.
• Provide immediate emergency response to all critical life safety situations on campus.
• Initiate reports involving criminal and other offences, investigate as required.
• Monitor CCTV cameras.
• Provide internal training, leadership, support and guidance to new and junior Campus Security staff.
• Respond to all calls for general service / assistance on campus.
• Maintain Emergency Response Plan contact information for EH&S chemical shipments.
• Provide skilled operation of the 24 hour security dispatch centre and all specialized computer systems (Simplex fire panel, DSX Access system, Phoenix Alarm system, Dispatch log, Perspective).
• Perform special investigations and other duties as required.

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Candidate must be licenced under the Security Services and Investigator Act (SSIA). SSIA will include Security Services, Loss Prevention and Executive Security.
• Current level C CPR (including AED) and Standard First Aid Certificates.
• Candidates are highly organized with demonstrated problem solving, leadership, and communication skills.
• Previous related security, service, or law enforcement experience accepted.
• Valid Class 5 Alberta Operators Licence with no current suspensions and presently fewer than six (6) demerits.
• Completion of at least a two year diploma program in a social science or related discipline.
• Physical fitness levels will be assessed using the Canadian Physical Activity Fitness and Lifestyle Appraisal (CPAFLA).
• Post secondary education security experience preferred.
• Knowledge of the University and academic processes are an asset.
• Successful candidates will be required to complete 80 hours of classroom training.
• No criminal convictions or charges pending.
• Experience with Perspective report writing software is beneficial.
• Candidates who proceed past the initial interview stage will be required to provide a current drivers abstract and criminal records search including a vulnerable sector search.
• Candidates should have an understanding of current security standards and practices.
