We are looking for students to join us in our Natural Gas Division for 8, 12, or 16 month co-op terms starting in September 2023 located in Edmonton or Calgary. Relocation assistance may be provided to the successful candidate.

Qualifications:


  • Must have a valid Class 5 Drivers’ License
  • Must be a self-motivated individual who is able to work effectively under minimal supervision
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and familiarity with PC applications including Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, SharePoint

Distribution Growth (Calgary)


This group is responsible for the engineering design of distribution system growth projects. The group assesses and responds to outside development in order to maintain adequate gas supply to customers. Distribution design integrates long term plans, studies and programs into projects for construction. Team members are responsible for the project management of their projects which includes the design, cost estimating, construction management and reporting. Distribution Growth also provides support to other groups for operational needs on an ongoing basis.


Pipeline Integrity (Edmonton, Calgary)


Cathodic Protection:


Responsible for monitoring and managing the integrity of the system using Cathodic Protection principles. This requires engineering judgment and project management skills to design, troubleshoot, forecast costs to manage cathodic protection systems. It also requires collecting and analyzing data to effectively manage pipeline system risks. Engineers in this group work with and learn from cathodic protection technicians, operations personnel, construction groups, and third-party vendors.


Projects:


Responsible for monitoring and managing the integrity of the existing natural gas systems. In addition to engineering designs, various inspections, asset information and industry data (i.e. Inline Inspection, None Destructive Examination, Geotechnical reports, Material properties, construction drawings, construction reports etc.) are reviewed to effectively manage system risks. This requires engineering judgment and project management skills. Engineers in this group work with and support other engineering groups, operations personnel, construction groups, third-party vendors, and industry consultants.


Systems Planning (Calgary)


Planning is responsible for the system design, project feasibility, initiation and justification for long-term development plans for ATCO’s natural gas infrastructure and evaluation of short-term operational scenarios. This involves analyzing the existing systems, operational considerations, and customer needs to ensure that requirements for natural gas services can be met. Planning builds and utilizes hydraulic models to assess the feasibility of projects and complete system optimization evaluations, develop and recommend least-cost project alternatives, and compare field and design conditions of the natural gas systems. The group conducts hydraulic analysis to evaluate existing natural gas system capacities and to determine any required pipeline improvements and expansions. Planning works closely with all other engineering departments to determine required system changes or improvements and coordinates with ATCO’s control centre to optimize its systems. The group is also responsible for writing business cases for project justification and providing support in AUC regulatory proceedings.


Transmission Engineering (Edmonton)


Transmission Engineering is responsible for project management and technical design for various projects related to the natural gas pipelines in the system. These projects include new taps and pipelines for customers, upgrades to make the system in-line inspection capable, replacement of pipelines at watercourse crossings, relocations for third parties, and general system improvements. Responsibilities include project management, technical design, cost estimation, material specification, and job procedure preparation. Transmission Engineering also undertakes various improvement initiatives, including developing and updating standards and specifications for use within ATCO.
