Position Overview


Reporting to the Electricity Program Director, the Clean Energy Manager will use their strong leadership and management skills, sharp political acuity, and clean energy and electricity policy knowledge to increase the Pembina Institute’s advocacy for clean energy solutions in Ontario. The Clean Energy Manager will work closely with other program directors to focus on issues such as renewable energy, natural gas production, electricity planning, zero- and low-emission transportation, and climate accountability.


The position may support government relations for other policy work including buildings and clean procurement. The role will contribute to strategic direction, manage media relations, lead qualitative and quantitative research, and work with government, industry, and the non-government sector to advance solutions. We are looking for a passionate individual with a solid work ethic and the tenacity needed to solve Canada’s most prominent energy and climate challenges.


Roles and Responsibilities


The Clean Energy Manager will:


  • Cultivate and maintain constructive relationships with government, industry leaders, technology providers, thought leaders, other ENGOS and Indigenous community members.
  • Integrate the perspectives from across program areas such as transportation, electricity renewable energy in government engagement.
  • May supervise analyst(s)
  • Manage and lead thorough technical, quantitative and qualitative analyses of energy systems, technologies, policies and regulatory solutions.
  • Serve as the point of contact with stakeholders including government, regulators, industry, and environmental groups on climate and energy policy.
  • Manage and lead qualitative research through literature reviews, expert interviews and case studies.
  • Represent the Pembina Institute’s views at meetings, regulatory hearings, presentations, and in the media.
  • Lead advocacy and research on clean energy policy for natural gas production, electricity and clean energy planning
  • Collaboratively create and manage high-quality project deliverables, including communication materials, reports, presentations, briefing notes and funding proposals


Skills And Qualifications


  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of renewable energy and electricity sector policy issues.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experienced presenter with ability to develop presentations and present to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to develop collaborative relationships and find solutions with a wide array of stakeholders who hold different interests.
  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in political science, engineering, sciences, economics, law, public policy or related field
  • Knowledge of the challenges and opportunities with Ontario and federal policy as it relates to energy, climate, and economic development.
  • Demonstrated capacity to integrate demand-side and supply-side solutions and ways of thinking in energy planning.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs in a Teams environment
  • A minimum of eight years of work experience on clean energy and electricity issues in industry, academia, government, or the non-profit sector
  • Ability to work in an inclusive and collaborative manner with related internal teams.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to execute multiple projects with multiple relationships and priorities.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly and concisely convey complex technical matters in plain language in reports, blogs, and other communications outputs.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing quantitative and qualitative technical research in energy and electricity policy.


Other Valuable Qualifications


  • Experience with energy and/or environmental policy advocacy and regulatory reform for environmental protection in the energy sector
  • Graduate degree in political science, science, engineering, public policy, environmental sustainability or clean energy.
  • High level of proficiency in MS Excel and experience developing Excel-based models.
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and social change through educational, professional and volunteer experience.
  • Direct experience in developing or implementing provincial and/or federal environmental policy and regulation.


Compensation And Benefits


Salary is commensurate with experience. The hiring range for this position is $72,000-$80,000 annually with a salary maximum of $87,000, increasing with acquired skills and experience in the role.
