Laboratory Technologist I (Open To Current Dynalife And Apl Employees)

Reporting to the Laboratory Technologist II, Assistant Manager, or Manager, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to: routine and specialized laboratory procedures and preparation of specimens.

Major Functions And Responsibilities

• Performs routine bench duties in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures to ensure a high quality, accurate and timely result.
• Monitors department supply inventory and acts appropriately to maintain.
• Files, retrieves and discards specimens/blocks /slides with a high degree of accuracy.
• Maintains, cleans, decontaminates and organizes work areas based on LEAN Six Sigma principles and SOPs.
• Responds appropriately to non-conforming events and unusual situations. Identifies when to refer more complex issues or problems to the immediate Supervisor.
• Operates, maintains and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments to ensure optimal function.
• Participates in the training and orientation of students and staff and evaluates their progress.
• Provides instruction and collects specimens ensuring sample integrity.
• Ensures annual competencies are completed within specified timelines.
• Maintains awareness and consistently practices all safety precautions and procedures including WHMIS.
• Performs other related duties.
• Participates in the validation and assessment of procedures and equipment under the direction of the senior techs and other leaders.
• Enters information into the Laboratory Information System and tracking system.
• Performs all quality control and assurance practices and maintains records as required.

Required Experience

• Experience grossing up to level IV is an asset
• Must have experience working as a Laboratory Technologist in Anatomic Pathology within the last 12 months or student experience within the last 12 months
• Experience performing and assessing special stains is an asset

Minimum Qualifications

• Medical Laboratory Technologist (CSMLS) with current CMLTA registration is required
• Flexibility to meet operational requirements including hours of work
