Alberta's Tomorrow Project (ATP; www.myATP.ca) is the largest research project ever undertaken in Alberta. ATP was launched in 2000 as a prospective cohort to examine the relationship between environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors and the incidence of cancer and chronic diseases. ATP aims to increase knowledge about the causes and prevention of cancer and chronic disease by tracking health and lifestyles of around 55,000 Albertans for up to 50 years. ATP also functions as a research platform and shares data and biosamples with the health research community in universities, health services delivery organizations, and research institutes in Alberta, Canada and abroad. ATP is also a member of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow’s Health (CanPath; www.canpath.ca), a consortium of cohort studies. ATP’s main activities include collection, processing and storage of data and biosamples as well as managing the research platform to support research into cancer and chronic disease. ATP shares data and biosamples with the health research community in universities, health services delivery organizations, and research institutes in Alberta and the rest of Canada. ATP encourages researchers from a variety of sectors to apply for access to use the existing ATP resources, using approved procedures. This position will support ATP Lab and Biobank operations in the Calgary office located at the Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.

Description:

As a Laboratory Assistant I, you will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including receiving and sorting specimens, cleaning and sanitizing lab equipment and performing basic lab tests. In addition, you will carry out essential clerical duties along with patient queries.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Graduate of a recognized MLA course with demonstrated competency in phlebotomy and demonstration of technical laboratory knowledge and skills. Minimum 2 years’ experience as an MLA working in a medium scale biobank utilizing biobanking procedures which include but are not limited to: sample pulls, freezer inventory tracking, and maintaining sample at -80°C during sample handling, freezer transfers, and preparation for shipping. Minimum 2 years’ experience collecting, processing, aliquoting and freezing human blood samples for a research study. Proficiency in using single channel and multichannel microliter pipettes. Experience in the safe handling of dry ice. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Proven analytical and problem-solving skills. Demonstration of collaboration within a team environment, good interpersonal skills, effective time management and the ability to set priorities. Ability to listen, comprehend and orally respond to or relate information in a clear and concise manner. Demonstrated ability to prioritize duties and workflow. TDG Certification. Completion of biobanking modules.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working within an AHS environment. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel). WHMIS training.
