Position Purpose

This is a key role in the company where errors can have significant ramifications. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the receipt of a decedent into their care for the purpose of preparation. Assisting licensed embalmers in the embalming preparation, dressing, cosmetology, casketing, coordinating the transfer of the deceased to the proper location for services. Casket inventory control, preparation inventory, restocking supplies. Care and maintenance and general cleaning of facility. Success in this position involves strong attention to detail, a caring and professional demeanor and appearance, as the Laboratory Assistant will have direct contact with the decedent as part of the care and preparation for subsequent funeral services.

Position Duties

• Must be comfortable wearing the company uniform and maintaining professional grooming standards.
• Applying cosmetics.
• Completion of the Funeral Director or Embalming diploma or enrollment in the program is considered an asset.
• Confirm application of massage cream.
• Determine and assign location in cooler.
• Update digital MC preparation board.
• Current Class 5 (non GDL) driver’s license with six or less demerits.
• Computer software skills in Outlook, Teams, Word, and Google Docs (removed excel)
• Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Extremely high ability to multitask - pivot between tasks with ease.
• Complete all required documentation when receiving deceased.
• Confirm identity.
• Assist embalmers.
• Assist transfer drivers with replenishing transfer driver prep area and transfer bags with supplies.
• Record and replenish embalming supplies as required.
• Organizational Skills with ability to prioritize and work under short timelines
• Must be able to adhere to McInnis & Holloway’s personal cell phone policy (as outlined in our employee handbook) that inhibits employees from having access to their phones outside of breaks and phones are not permitted on your desk. Emergency contacts can reach all employees on our main phone line.
• Communicate with purchasing on a weekly basis to record current casket inventory and quantities.
• Professional, helping and caring demeanor.
• Transfer deceased from cooler for preparation as required.
• Confirm personal effects sheet.
• Professional image standards including professional hair styles, nail polish, jewelry, approved shoe styles are detailed in McInnis & Holloway’s employee handbook.
• Excellent English oral communication skills and a second language is considered an asset.
• Assisting and coordination with dispatch for the transfer of deceased for services.
• Care and maintenance and general cleaning of facility and equipment.
• Setting features.
• Weekend and working holidays are required as is staying later than shift end if the requirements of the business need to be met.
• Inventory control.
• Record and replenish general maintenance supplies as required.
• Keen attention to detail
• Able to lift and carry up to 100 kg and able to move a casket safely.
