Job Description
Position: HR and Operations Advisor
Organization: Community Arts Guild
Location: Work from home and some in-person East Scarborough, flexible
Start Date: October 2023
Compensation: We are able to offer $41,000 for a .6FTE (3 days/ week) for a one year contract. ($68k pro-rated 3 days per week) : $35/hr. Available funding covers the first 12 months of employment, and it is our hope to secure additional funding for a permanent role.
We would be open to working with an individual as either an employee or as a contractor.
Term: This is a year-long part-time contract position from October 2023 - September 2024
About Community Arts Guild:
The Community Arts Guild uses art to build community. We are a non-profit arts organization situated in the beautiful and vibrant East Scarborough community. We spark collaborations between professional artists and people of all ages and backgrounds with different levels of artistic skill, experience, and confidence. We use art to realize the creative potential of people and places and form new connections and understanding between people who may not otherwise meet.
Now 11 years in operation, we are a team of three core staff with a group of regular artist collaborators. We make art of all kinds, collaborating across disciplines and traditions, but most often creating performances and events that draw on parade, puppetry, and installation. Through a partnership with the City of Toronto, we are housed at the beautiful Cedar Ridge Creative Centre, surrounded by a park and garden on a ravine. We offer flexible programs and projects, some small and process-focused, and others large-scale presentations developed over many months or years; we are grounded in relationships and motivated by shared artistic excitement.
About the role:
The Community Arts Guild is looking for a business and operational savvy, not-for-profit leader to help us grow. With some additional experience and expertise we are ready to evolve how we work internally and expand how we serve the community. We are looking for someone who has helped to build or implement fundraising strategies, internal systems and structures and is able to support a small and mighty staff team. The HR and Operations Advisor will work with our Artistic Director and staff team to mentor and aid us in organizational development. Over the course of the year, they will build our capacity: help us become better fundraisers, and strengthen our organizational and HR structures. They will contribute to improving administrative systems, and planning for financial sustainability to support our mission.
Our hope is that at the end of the year, their role has secure funding to transition into a permanent role within the organization and the staff team is working with additional structure and stability as we continue to deepen our work in East Scarborough.
This position is for an average of 3 days per week, with flexibility in scheduling.
Skills and experience:
-Non-profit organizational development and management experience
-A passion for building capacity of organizations and individuals
-Strong business acumen, ability to make strategic decisions optimizing opportunities and managing risks within a specific business model
-A collaborative network of professionals and peers who can provide ideas, advice and examples as we build systems and structures
-Strong fundraising skills including how to develop a fundraising plan and set reasonable goals for sustainable funding
-Organized, good attention to detail
-Comfortable working in a flexible, collaborative work environment
-Excellent oral and written communication skills
-Strong interpersonal skills, enjoys working with people
-Respect for diverse people and communities, committed to working towards inclusion and equity
-Interest or experience in arts administration is an asset
-Experience with Quickbooks or similar accounting software an asset
Tasks and responsibilities:
-Create an annual fundraising plan and collaborate with staff to write proposals and reach out to funders
-Oversee application process as we pursue charitable status
-Create a strategy to improve our Human -Resources functions so that we are better able to recruit and retain staff to our team
-Build systems and structures to enable smoother collaboration including organizational and individual work plans
-Bring financial planning and monitoring tools to our operations enabling us to report to funders and use financial data to make strategic long term decisions
