Job Description

This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

Location - North Campus Edmonton. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

Position


Working in the ABMI’s Geospatial Centre, the GIS Technician is responsible for interpretation, deliniation, mapping human footprint from satellite imagery and GIS data, and editing of existing spatial data layers. This also includes the organization of existig GIS layers so that the data can be effectively used in scientific analysis and reporting.


Duties


  • Interpret and map human footprint from satellite imagery and GIS layers
  • Ability to investigate and apply emerging GIS-based approaches to improve the work quality and solutions
  • Coordinate and undertake quality assurance and quality control on work prior to passing it on as required
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work independently or within project teams of various sizes
  • Summarize and export GIS information as required for analyses and distributing output information


Qualifications


  • Post-secondary degree in GIS, remote sensing, natural resource science, or related discipline preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered; minimum High School Diploma
  • Familiar with a variety of technologies capable of storing spatial data (i.e., ArcSDE, file geodatabases, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.)
  • Minimum one year with ArcGIS experience and hands-on experience with geospatial analysis and applied GIS-based tools
  • Familiarity with Alberta’s landscape and environmental settings
  • Proficient and thorough understanding of GIS and spatial analysis principles and applications
