Field Placement Specialist


The incumbent is responsible for the facilitation and coordination of the field placement process for the Allied Health department. Collaborating closely with the academic programs and community partners, the incumbent oversees the alignment of the field placement experience with the academic program to ensure the applied learning opportunity enhances and is directly relevant to the student’s classroom learning. The FPS continuously oversees students to promote their success in placement and the acquisition of vocational and essential employability skills. Equally as vital, the FPS must establish and maintain relationships with community stakeholders that ensure the continuance of existing field placement opportunities and elicit new field placement opportunities.


The incumbent makes students aware of the Pre-placement requirements by developing and delivering field placement preparation courses, in-class workshops, assignments, case studies and collaborates with program staff to determine placement eligibility. The FPS is responsible for sourcing, assessing, and procuring placement opportunities for students. The incumbent organizes the overall field placement process, field placement interviews, agency expectations, and student essential employability skills, and is the principal point of contact for students, preceptors, and agencies. With a high level of critical thinking, the FPS identifies, responds to, investigates, and determines course of action for a diverse number of inquiries and issues from students, staff, faculty, other departments, and placement agencies. The FPS provides ongoing support and resources to students that promote student success and retention.


The FPS is responsible for sourcing and communicating accurate program standards through the development and maintenance of manuals, forms, and testing materials, as well as online resources, and agency and student meetings. The FPS functions as a principal resource for students, faculty and agencies to consult with and provide direction regarding field placement related college policies and procedures.


Responsibilities


Student Preparation and Development


  • Organize, facilitate and oversee the overall field placement process.
  • Promote student retention by providing outreach, advising, coaching, and guiding towards the utility of available College and external supports and resources.
  • Document and summarize student’s performance, determine the need for intervention and develop and implement student success agreements.
  • Review and confirm accurate completion of placement documents.
  • Coach students.
  • Communicate with support staff external partners and students to meet the needs of the placement.
  • Collaborate with Field Placement coordinator and/or faculty in program areas to determine suitability of new placement opportunities based on needs and/or issues of the students.
  • Present knowledge transfer by supporting preplacement course requirements
  • Advise students on placement requirements and outcomes.
  • Document, compile, and analyze data to support sound decision making regarding student progression.
  • Develop, revise and update program manuals and placement documents while meeting expected timelines and deadlines. Post announcements, program documents/forms.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and documents.
  • Inform students on the College’s placement protocol, policies, and procedures. Report and track student’s completion of required pre-placement documentation.
  • Oversee students in field placement settings.
  • Respond to health and safety related concerns.


External Community Partnership


  • Develop and maintain significant, productive relationships at all levels with community partners/placement agency which elicit future placement and employment opportunities for students.
  • Provide outreach and respond to crisis, provide direction as requested, collaborate with the placement agency to determine how students can better meet the needs of the agency while still meeting their learning goals.
  • Partner with local agencies and organizations to build awareness of the profession and to stay current with trends, training, and to provide opportunities to network.
  • Engage and initiate strategic networking initiatives to cultivate and maintain a network of contacts in the wider community to enhance field placement opportunities.


Faculty and Institutional Engagement


  • Investigate and initiate contact with community agencies regarding placement opportunities and inquiries.
  • Contribute to the attainment of the college’s strategic priorities by leading and/or undertaking special projects approved by or assigned by the manager.
  • Attend and contribute to promotion meetings, program and advisory committee meetings, program and departmental meetings, student conferences with Coordinator and program staff, Open House and meetings with community programs.
  • Research, source and inform trends/best practices concerning placement.
  • Update community partner profiles and programs, gather and compile data to support sound decision making by the college and its partners in relation to placement trends/shifts.
  • Assist in the development of administrative processes, document trails, other metric systems for purpose of capturing performance data, including agency and student satisfaction results, participation levels, and other placement employment success measures.


Qualifications


The successful candidate will have:


  • Mental Health First Aid or experience with the Mental Health field is an asset.
  • A minimum of a two-year Allied Health related diploma in Cardiovascular Technology, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, OTA/PRTA, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of software programs such as Prezi, Camtasia, Audacity are also an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
  • A minimum of three years of practical related experience in the designated field of placement, ideally serving a multi-diverse, multi-cultural community.
  • Proficiency in the full scope of MS Office.
  • A valid G driver’s license and a car to use on a daily basis is mandatory.
