Program Overview
Funded by Immigration Refugees Citizenship of Canada (IRCC), Newcomer Pathways into Skilled Trades pilot project will prepare internationally experienced skilled trades individuals for the Trade Equivalency Assessment (TEA). Project will support them every step of the way as they gain the Red Seal or Certificate of Qualifications they need to start working in Ontario.
JVS Toronto offers a range of mentoring services, including online mentoring, group mentoring, and in-person mentoring. Individual in this role will be supporting our various mentoring initiatives.
Reporting to the Manager, Newcomer Pathways into Skilled Trades, the individual in this position will provide direct client services in the areas of needs assessment, employment preparation, referral to community resources and support services, case management; and performs related duties as required. This position oversees Skilled Trades Equivalency Assessment (TEA) clients.
We’re looking for a proactive and self-motivated individual who will:
  • Screen and match mentors/mentees, conduct online mentor/mentee orientation and secure mentoring matches
  • Liaise with job development services, accrediting bodies, professional associations, government departments and other social, employment and community agencies as needed to facilitate clients’ progress
  • Assistance to be provided in the areas of: skilled trades licensing/certification requirements, career path exploration, micro credential opportunities or other identified pre-employment needs
  • Assist clients in identifying training opportunities to develop job search skills and job search strategies
  • Support, follow-up and monitor clients at pre-determined intervals as they progress through the TEA process
  • Maintain file case notes, and appropriate documentation to reflect clients’ progress
  • Provide individual employment counselling and program referrals in the office and online
  • Case manage and monitor mentoring relationships to ensure mentee/mentor goals are met
  • Provide general labour market information to clients
  • Assess need for additional assistance such as financial aid and/or further vocational training/skills upgrading and make appropriate referrals
  • Develop and deliver mentoring training content and program outreach as needed
  • Interview clients to obtain employment history, educational background, career goals etc. using Employment Intake Assessment tool
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling, or Social Services or a related program with 1-2 years of employment counselling experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work in coordination and collaboration with community partners and other services providers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Strong understanding of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices.
  • Experience working, training or coaching adults in a technical trade is an asset
  • Able to work independently, seek out new information, engage in self-directed learning and make the connections necessary to effectively support program participants
  • Computer literate; the ability to learn systems used by the agency (ie. SalesForce)
  • Experience working with newcomers to Canada and a strong understanding of barriers to social and economic participation
  • A clear Police Vulnerable Sector check is required for this position
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

  • Employment Ontario knowledge and exposure
  • Fluency in Arabic or Spanish
  • Demonstrated foundational knowledge of skilled trades occupations and the trades equivalency assessment process
