Job Description
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Director, Corporate and Commercial acts as senior corporate/commercial counsel for WorkSafeBC and leads a department of corporate/commercial lawyers.

Where you'll work

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you'll work primarily at our Richmond office (or the nearest WorkSafeBC office to you). You will travel occasionally throughout the province.

  • Be responsible for developing the legal skills of the lawyers on your team through hands-on coaching and mentoring.
  • Negotiate and draft commercial agreements on behalf of WorkSafeBC with external parties for the delivery of services, including IT, health care and general business services.
  • Participate in strategic and business planning for the Law & Policy Division, including formulating operational plans for your team.
  • Provide overall direction and leadership on the Department's provision of corporate/commercial legal services to WorkSafeBC.
  • Support business initiatives by participating on enterprise and divisional committees.
  • Carry a full caseload, with a focus on procurement law. You will advise WorkSafeBC management during all phases of the procurement process, including strategic legal advice on procurement and contract requirements, contract management and vendor management.
We're looking for someone:

  • Can interact with management, peers, and clients in a confident, professional and objective manner.
  • Can work in a corporate environment.
  • Whose clients trust them to provide legal advice that is not only right, but is practical, timely, and includes options for clients to achieve their desired outcome.
  • Who constantly strives to grow and develop as a lawyer, and takes pride in producing a quality legal product.
  • Who takes an outcome-oriented and problem-solving approach with clients and team members to resolve an issue.
Your background and experience

  • Senior level experience in a private practice or inhouse setting, working with executives and senior-level management.
  • A lawyer who is a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia, with a minimum of ten years of related corporate/commercial experience.
  • Experience in managing a busy corporate/commercial practice in a team-based environment.
Important to know

Before we can finalize any offer of employment, you must consent to a criminal record check and confirm you're legally entitled to work in Canada.

WorkSafeBC's COVID-19 Employee Mandatory Vaccine Policy (the "Policy") is suspended effective January 9, 2023, however we reserve the right to re-implement it in response to changes in the public health landscape, including public health orders. We are committed to the protection, health, and safety of our employees and our Communicable Disease Prevention Program and related protocols remain in effect.
