The Opportunity


The Director is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for the new office of Community Engagement at SAIT. The Director oversees all aspects of the Community Engagement function including strategic planning, staffing, promotion, partnership management, and reporting. Leading a new and high-profile initiative, the Director must advance Community Engagement by fostering innovation and working collaboratively with SAIT Schools and Departments, as well as city (e.g. City of Calgary, CED), post-secondary, industry, and other community partners. The Director is also responsible for developing and overseeing a new approach to measuring community engagement initiatives and impact across SAIT.


The Role


Strategic mindset and planning


  • Utilize experience in integrating vision, strategy, tactics and activities to move a portfolio forward
  • Collaborate with SAIT leadership team to uniquely position and market SAIT’s Community Engagement initiative and impact
  • Lead and drive the overall coordination and integration of Community Engagement programs within SAIT
  • Develop and execute a strategic and responsive Community Engagement plan, in support of SAIT strategic priorities
  • Set strategic objectives and direction for the Community Engagement office and ensure the achievement of short, medium, and long-term goals in alignment with institutional strategic priorities


Operations and management


  • Ensure the department’s business plan is developed, implemented and monitored in keeping with the institution’s objectives, policies and procedures
  • Prioritize effective communication within the department, with other schools/departments, and with partners and clients as appropriate
  • Accountable for operational excellence and ensuring detailed financial and performance reporting
  • Ensure alignment of annual staff performance goals to strategic objectives
  • Play a lead role in establishing a sustainable growth and development plan for the Community Engagement office that aligns to and supports the institution’s strategic plan
  • Regularly measure progress on tactical plans and their impact and adjust course of action when required
  • Employ strong management principles in leading, managing and supporting activities within the department and for the institution
  • Provide risk management and oversight for programming


Business development, funding, and partnerships


  • Continue to strengthen relationships with community partners and advance SAIT’s role and reputation as a community builder and leader
  • Grow SAIT’s reputation within the field of Community Engagement through amplifying current initiatives, convening community stakeholders, telling SAIT’s community engagement story, and profiling our thought leadership
  • Initiate, coordinate and interpret market research relevant to community engagement to competitively position SAIT locally, nationally and internationally
  • Take an active role with Alumni and Development to secure additional funding (donor, grant, sponsorship) to meet Community Engagement funding requirements and support the success of Community Engagement initiatives
  • Ensure advisory committees are properly structured and managed so that Community Engagement objectives are achieved
  • Collaborate across the institution to foster positive working relationships and remove barriers between schools/departments to advance a SAIT-wide community engagement strategy
  • Represent Community Engagement on cross-institutional projects, teams and/or committees as required
Qualifications


  • Ten-plus years of progressively senior leadership experience in related fields
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective and engaging relationships with internal and external partners
  • Holds or is making substantive progress towards the attainment of a Master’s degree in business, leadership, or education
  • Candidates must have a high degree of accountability with the ability to work independently and effectively lead teams
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills along with demonstrated project management skills
