About the Position
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Internal Communications with guidance from the Director of Internal Communications and Editor-in-Chief, the Communications Consultant develops key communications projects and assets for The Salvation Army’s THQ program, information technology, business and human relations departments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications Department Networking
- Play a key role in department planning meetings to assist with identifying events/resources and tools for territorial promotion
- Work with department teams to identify and assess potential communications projects or story leads
Internal Marketing
- Develop and share effective communication tools and tactics that can be used both at territorial headquarters as well as at divisional and local levels
- Identify, initiate and enhance marketing efforts to promote and strengthen territorial campaigns, events and resource materials
- Understand different media/audiences and the impact on achieving missional objectives, and contribute to tactical media and creative plans
- Distribute creative assets to territorial units based on approved national strategy
E-Newsletters
- Use analytics to determine effectiveness of email strategy (e.g., brand awareness, engagement, etc.)
- Develop a monthly calendar for e-newsletters that supports the internal communications team’s strategic goals, beginning at concept stage, with a regular email distribution
- Strategize and co-ordinate written content for e-newsletters
- Identify and curate photos, graphics or videos to include in the e-newsletter design
Communications Projects and Reports
- Creatively employ techniques, standards and best practices to guide storytelling, and monitor consistency, relevancy and quality of finished production
- Prepare content for departmental reports, working with graphic designer and other communications consultants
- Work with internal communications teams to advance the publication of stories, literature, and thought pieces that meet program department needs and interests. Act as a trusted advisor and proactively make recommendations to support department objectives and goals
- Contribute to Salvationist.ca departmental sub-sites and blogs by writing content that meets needs and is aligned with department goals from concept to delivery
- Play a key role in department team planning and project management activities
Social Media
- Monitor and track monthly digital statistics and provide reports that outline both quantitative and qualitative results to leadership
- Work with various THQ departments to manage and update a content calendar that outlines important themes and dates (e.g., Soldier Renewal Sunday, seasonal worship events) to post to platforms
- Monitor community management and respond to inquiries in a timely manner
- Collaborate with editorial and marketing teams to update Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in line with the content calendar and as appropriate to other accounts
- Ensure all legal requirements (e.g., accessibility compliance) and identity standards are met
Website
- Network with THQ department members to implement ongoing website enhancements, assess and review industry best practices and offer expertise
- Meet the needs and goals of THQ departments by monitoring and updating content on the Salvationist.ca website
Creative Content
- Support adaptation of graphics/content for French language where needed
- Support team members on communications projects through all stages to meet established timelines, ensuring all media resources adhere to the organization’s brand guidelines and strategic goals
- Together with THQ program departments, assist in the preparation of training and educational tools for the territory (webinars, online training)
- Provide photography to enhance storytelling, document services, and provide for business needs (headshots) and event coverage
- Work with digital team to create print and digital assets such as brochures, posters, logos, etc.
- Ensure all creative adheres to copyright and that project release forms are completed and digitized
- Assist with creating materials for presentations, conferences and learning experiences
Video and Podcast Production
- Participate in live productions as required, including webcasts, podcasts and multi-camera shoots
- Work with the video team to write and coordinate scripts, edit titles and graphics, SRT files and provide input into final product
Special Events
- Liaise with Events Coordinator to create evites, registration, save-the-date notices, promotional materials, branding and print materials for events
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Completion of a college/university degree in journalism, marketing or public relations is required
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
• Five to seven years in related writing/communications/web/social media experience in an organizational setting, with previous non-profit experience an asset
• Exceptional grammar, communication and writing skills on all media platforms
• Ability to use different types of photographic equipment and software
• Excellent working knowledge and experience in various software such as Microsoft Office, website content management systems, social media scheduling software, Google Analytics
• Understanding of social media platforms and best practices
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications preferred (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Audition)
• Knowledge of AODA and other web standards
• Working knowledge of event registration tools such as Eventbrite

• Familiarity with The Salvation Army is an asset
• Flexibility to work outside regular business hours on occasion

Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $58,719 - $73,399, with the ability to progress to a maximum of $88,079. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
