Job Description
YMCA Southern Interior BC is a charitable association dedicated to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. Y programs provide experiences to over 30,000 individuals annually in the areas of health, fitness & recreation, childcare, day camping, employment and community health. With a current annual operating budget of $20 million, the association employs over 400 full and part time staff and has over 150 volunteers.


YMCA Southern Interior BC is based in the City of Kelowna; situated about 400 km east of Vancouver in the Okanagan Valley. With an area population of 180,000, the area is located on the edge of Lake Okanagan and is renowned for its spectacular lake and mountain setting, vineyards, and range of recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and beaches. Kelowna weather offers hot, dry summers and mild winters.


Nature and Scope:


The Chief Financial Officer will serve as an essential partner and strategic advisor to the CEO and Executive Team, playing a key role in collaboratively shaping the long-term financial strategy and success of YMCA of Southern Interior BC. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this position holds responsibility for providing strategic financial leadership and oversight of the YMCAs overall well-being including investments, asset management, capital projects, insurance, enterprise risk management/compliance, information technology management, process improvement, policy development and business planning.


This role requires a tech-savvy individual with superior communication skills, outstanding relationship building abilities and a strong financial management background.


Responsibilities:


  • Makes timely decisions and applies sound judgement to assess risks, evaluate alternatives and select the best course of action; uses a combination of analytical thinking, intuition, mental agility and seasoned experience to address complex and ambiguous issues
  • Continually identifies, develops and implements process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of finance and operational processes as well as leads policies and procedures development, improvements and implementation.
  • Responsible for asset management and planning including facilities, transportation, infrastructure, and equipment. Able to identify current and future needs and develop strategies to address those needs.
  • Oversees the financial planning, budgeting processes and procedures, financial and cash flow forecasts and analyses investment portfolios, and capital projects
  • Guides the ongoing development and refinement of financial goals/objectives, and strategies that are aligned with the vision and priorities of the organization.
  • As a business partner, offers strategic advice and recommendations in relation to the expansion and effective growth strategy based on business planning, financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Works collaboratively with leadership to envision, define, develop and implement strategic initiatives that support the growth, evolution and success of YMCA of Southern Interior BC.
  • Ensures that effective financial and systems controls and reporting are in place and in compliance with applicable provincial and federal legislation, regulations and policies.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and collaborative working relationships with various internal and external stakeholders including members, participants, staff, donors, funders, vendors and government.
  • Significant capacity to lead the delivery of support services that allow operational leaders and staff to deliver quality programs and services to our community.
  • Reviews month-end procedures, internal and external reporting and supports staff with preparing annual reports, audit, filings and other regulatory requirements.
  • Provides direction and oversight of the finance and information technology portfolios as a collaborative team player with a record of contributing to high performing leadership teams.
  • Understands and is prepared to oversee IT services.
  • Leads and builds a team of diverse, skilled and dedicated professionals committed to the YMCA’s mission, vision and strategic priorities
  • Collaborates to ensure that a robust risk management framework is maintained which encompasses financial risk, health and safety, technology, physical infrastructure, staffing, and organizational reputation and brand.


Qualifications:


  • Technology savvy with experience in selecting, implementing, and overseeing business software and managing relationships with software vendors;
  • Recognized professional accounting designation with a minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience;
  • Six to ten years experience leading a financial services team with experience in generating financial reporting, financial analysis and working with Board and Committees;
  • Strong decision making skills, problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Proven success in a similar position with similar responsibilities;
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting software and reporting (YMCA software includes Great Plains Accounting, UKG; Raiser’s Edge Fundraising Management; Avocado Salesforce CRM software); proficiency in Office 365 software with advanced skills in Excel and Sharepoint
