Job Description

Lead Financial Operations

The CFO will be responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the firm and will work hand in glove with the COO in providing best in class decision support to the Management Committee.The CFO has an opportunity to provide strategic analysis and recommendations that contribute to firm excellence and growth.

A part of their early work, the CFO will help to select and roll out a new accounting system, a few of which have already been shortlisted.

Proactive analysis related to several measures, including profitability among practice groups will aid in transparency among revenue generators, and assist in identifying areas that can be further enhanced.Far from being a ‘rear view mirror accounting professional’, the CFO can have a future-focused, highly strategic impact going forward.

Build Capacity

The CFO will have an opportunity to lead a long-standing and capable accounting team. As with any change in leadership, an opportunity exists to take a fresh look at existing practices.Introducing new modern, sophisticated approaches to financial analysis and accounting will be key to the role and mentoring the team through the associated change management will also be important.A necessary part of this work will be developing a strong understanding of the operations, navigating within a partnership amidst what is a competitive and client service environment.

Specific Responsibilities

Oversees and mentors the Accounting team (based in Vancouver), including the accounting function for the Toronto office.

Monitors the Firm's financial performance, cashflow, expenses, trust requisitions, lawyer billings to budget performance, tax implications, and provides timely recommendations to the Firm's Management Committee (MC).

Prepares the annual operating budget (revenue and operating costs).

Prepares financial and billing reports for the monthly MC meeting as well as firmwide Quarterly Meetings, and the Compensation Committee.

Responsible to ensure financial reporting and forecasting is continually reviewed and updated based on strategic needs.

Tracks Partner and Counsel monthly draws and manages undrawn income in conjunction with the MC.

Oversees account receivables, responsible for improving collections and initiates the AR Taskforce.

Generates reports for business development initiatives and advises on clients trends.

Manages the relationship with the Firm's bank, accountants, and suppliers. Oversees the annual audit and trust audit.

Recommends and roll-outs a new accounting system for the Firm that includes docketing, billing, receivables, file opening, conflict checks, reports, and dashboard tracker.

Conducts competitive supplier cost review to ensure the Firm is getting best pricing.

Develops new and improves existing accounting processes, including file opening and file closing.

Collaborates with Partners and other Managers/Directors in the Firm.

Oversees the Firm's insurance needs and annual renewal process, including Law Society dues and insurance for BC and ON.

Manages compliance with Law Societies rules, accounting regulations, and claim reporting requirements for the Firm's professional liability insurance.

Performs special projects as assigned by the Management Committee.
