Reporting to the Senior Manager, Policy and Compliance the Audit & Compliance Manager in conjunction with the Policy and Compliance team, provides Firm management with accurate, relevant and timely financial information used to make decisions impacting the business. This includes co-ordination of all internal reviews and external audits, assisting with month end and year end financial reporting procedures, implementing internal control and process improvements, and provides assistance with the annual budgeting program. The Audit & Compliance Manager will serve as a project lead/manager for project implementations within the Accounting area.
Major Responsibilities
  • Leads preparation of the monthly and annual audited financial statements and the related supporting schedules
  • Reviews transactions for compliance with Firm policies, including expense claims and general firm expenses, and serve as a point of contact for questions when applying Firm policies to transactions being processed by other functions within Finance
  • Actively involved in process improvements including developing innovative, proactive and efficient ways to improve quality, process and customer services
  • Ensures the timely and accurate reporting of the annual trust reports for the Law Society of Ontario, Law Society of Alberta, Law Society of British Columbia and Barreau du Québec
  • Assist in the analysis of budget submissions, providing summarized issue analysis for Senior Manager or Director to utilize in budget review meetings
  • Co-ordinates the conduct of the Firm’s annual external audit of its Financial Statements, tax and trust accounting operations with the Firm’s external auditors, various tax authorities or auditors from various Law Societies
  • Prepares financial statements for the Firm’s pension program and liaises with auditors during the Firm’s pension audit
  • Co-ordinates routine compliance functions including adherence to expense and billing policies, commodity tax rules and various other internal reviews as assigned
  • As a senior member of the team, this role will assist in coaching the Senior Accountant and Accounting Coordinator with their tasks and serve as an escalation point and backup for their duties
  • Assists with the Firm’s annual budgeting program with respect to capital project tracking and administrative department analysis
  • Responsible for leading special financial analysis and reporting projects as assigned; may require supervising and leading other team members to achieve project goals
  • Leads the assembly of information for the Firm’s annual budgeting exercise for support departments and acts as a point of contact for questions from the budget holders
Position Requirements
Education and Experience
The position requires a university degree and a CPA designation (preferably through the CA stream or having alternate audit experience), and a minimum of five years of accounting experience is also desired. Some supervisory/managerial experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be acceptable.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Solid knowledge of advanced accounting concepts and principles
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Strong knowledge of commodity taxes
  • Project Management skills in order to lead teams on projects
  • Understanding of internal controls of an accounting department
  • Ability to organize data to achieve desired results and design custom reports
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • Communication skills (written and verbal), focused listening, interpersonal and negotiation skills are required to communicate with a number of various contacts at all levels, including the Partners of the Firm
  • Time management and organizational skills in order to efficiently multi-task and prioritize among many demands
  • Knowledge of Osler financial analytical tools such as Excel (advanced), SQL, Adobe Acrobat, ADERANT, Intellistat, PowerBI, DocuSign and Microsoft SQL Reporting Services (SSRS) preferred
  • Analytical skills necessary for detailed analyses
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft products including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with numbers
