ROM SUMMER CLUB – 1-to-1 SUPPORT ASSISTANT

ROM is seeking several responsible individuals to fill this role. The ROM Assistant will work 1-on-1 with campers with disabilities or those who require additional support to ensure an inclusive camp experience. 1-on-1 staff may support campers with disabilities including neurodiverse campers and campers with physical disabilities (ie. ADHD, ASD, learning differences and disabilities, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, etc.).


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Model positive behaviour
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Act in a friendly and courteous manner to caregivers and children at all times
  • Assist instructor to ensure integration with the group by adapting games, activities, movement through the Museum, and field trips
  • Supervise camper during breaks and lunch
  • Update caregivers on relevant information regarding the child’s camp experience
  • Ensure inclusion within camp group
  • Read and understand the profile of the assigned camper and conduct a pre-camp phone call with caregivers
  • Use adaptive equipment in a safe and responsible manner, as necessary
  • Prepare support materials prior to each day to aid in camper integration
  • Ensure camper’s routines of daily care, health support (possible medication)


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • The following additional qualifications are strong assets:
  • Previous experience working with children with disabilities (ie. those with physical disabilities, neurodivergence, and any other disabilities)
  • Secondary education in a Museum-related field (Art, Archaeology, Life Sciences, Earth Science, History)
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Successful candidates must be 16 years of age by the start of the contract
  • Coaching/lifeguard certification
  • Assistants require at least one (1) year experience working with children in an educational/camp environment and are able to work cooperatively with other team members


A cover letter should accompany each résumé indicating your work availability and the ability to attend several mandatory orientations planned for May 28. Finally, each applicant must be prepared to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening specific to individuals who work with children or vulnerable persons.


STARTING DATE: May 28 to September 1, 2023


SALARY: $16.00 per hour
