Job Description

The Brenda Strafford Foundation (BSF) was founded by Dr. Barrie Strafford in 1975 to honour his late wife, Brenda. Dr. Strafford passed away in 2016, leaving an impactful legacy of serving older adults, healthcare, research, and innovation.


With more than 1,000 beds and about 1,500 employees, BSF services extend across four key areas with an overarching goal of advancing healthcare and achieving social impact: Aging Care & Senior Living, International Healthcare, Community Supports, and Research & Innovation. The BSF’s core operations are based out of Calgary and Okotoks, Alberta; however, operations are also located in the Caribbean countries of Jamaica, Dominica, and Haiti.


In addition to our expertise in aging care, the BSF specializes in eyecare throughout the Caribbean, and domestic violence prevention in the Calgary region. The BSF also has a close affiliation with research at the University of Calgary through The Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging, and through the establishment of Research Chair positions in Geriatric Medicine, Alzheimer’s Research, and the Prevention of Domestic Violence.


The Vice President of People, Culture, and Belonging serves as a passionate advocate for the organization's journey to become the employer of choice. They provide visionary leadership to the Human Resources team, driving the development and implementation of the Human Resources Operating Plan in alignment with the organization's direction and goals. Their responsibilities encompass a wide range of areas, including cultural alignment, enhancing the employee experience, fostering inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, shaping organizational design, developing competency models, creating career pathways and leadership development initiatives, managing labour and employee relations, overseeing recruitment and retention efforts, ensuring occupational health, safety, and wellness, and managing compensation and benefits.


In addition to these core responsibilities, the Vice President of People, Culture, and Belonging is dedicated to championing the wellness and growth of employees. They actively promote the organization's employee value proposition and spearhead initiatives to attract and nurture top talent, establish meaningful career advancement opportunities, oversee human resources management, and cultivate a positive, inclusive, and innovative culture.


The successful candidate will come with a level of education and experience commensurate with the position, including:

  • A University Degree is required, with preference for graduate-level education in a related field.
  • Ability to champion an inclusive workplace culture and cultivate a compelling employer brand that attracts, retains, and develops top talent.
  • Knowledge or experience in senior’s care, healthcare, and/or public policy is an asset.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a senior HR leadership role, demonstrating expertise in leader the HR function and aligning human resources, culture, people services, and organizational outcomes.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading comprehensive human resources programs and initiatives, from conceptualization to implementation, in line with broader business/organizational objectives.
