Job Description
The Directors Guild of Canada, BC District Council (DGC BC) is a labour organization representing key creative and logistical personnel in the film and television industry in British Columbia. The DGC BC Collective Agreement covers Directors, Production Management, Assistant Director and Locations Departments, as well as Production Assistants.
About the Position: Vice President of Director Relations
We are seeking a knowledgeable and professional team player to join us in our East Vancouver office. This position is full-time and will involve travel.
The primary goal of this position will be to work towards improved statistical changes to the volume of Canadian Directors hired on service produced TV Series and to oversee and administer the new language within the Collective Agreement that pertains to the hiring of BC Directors. Strong relationships with key decision makers including Studio Executives, showrunners, and others involved in hiring Directors is an essential asset for this position.
Job Duties Include The Following
  • Work with staff to provide diversity codes to studios or productions with bonafide equity programs and assist in tracking of same.
  • Meetings should be set as far in advance as possible with goal of meeting before all Directors have been booked or chosen for the series.
  • Working with the Directors Caucus Advisory Committee, establish television Director development programs that support experienced, as well as emerging, DGC BC Directors.
  • Encourage Director Members to update their profiles on directors.ca.
  • Collaborate to establish television Director development programs that support DGC BC Directors from historically disadvantaged and under-represented groups.
  • Continuously research and learn what obstacles are inhibiting Decision Makers from hiring BC Directors and report them back to the DGC BC with suggested solutions.
  • Maintain a current and up to date contact list of the above studio Executives including high level notes regarding all meetings and discussions.
  • Collect data of studio contacts and meetings and cross reference which of those contacts have resulted in meetings with Director Members.
  • Work with the DGC BC team to identify and aggregate the widest possible list of decision makers based in LA who are involved in the hiring process of BC Directors including executives, showrunners and producers, as well anyone who has shown interest in supporting BC based Director’s careers.
  • Follow up meetings should be set to encourage the hiring of Canadian Directors and to track effectiveness.
  • Promote and demonstrate directors.ca as required.
  • Attend meetings, events, etc. as required to network with DGC BC Director Members.
  • Nurture relationships with Director Agents and Managers.
  • On an annual basis, collaborate with the national organization to review and assist in creation of the Directors Statistics report
  • Participate in bargaining and related prep that pertains to Canadian Director issues.
  • Suggesting possible connections for Meet Your Match and other events.
  • The duties and responsibilities of this role may change and evolve as the role develops.
  • Setup regular meetings for the purpose of discussing employment of Canadian Directors on current, new or returning TV series shot in BC.
  • On a monthly basis meet with Senior DGC BC Staff to discuss progress including new relationships, follow ups, research and results of meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia team to identify clear goals and create a comprehensive outreach plan with a roadmap to increase awareness and build an evergreen community in Los Angeles for Canadian Directors.
  • Promoting and encouraging DGC BC Directors to participate in existing studio Director Development programs.
  • Track new and returning TV Series productions to coordinate Director Member meetings.
  • Travel as required to maintain relationships with decision makers and to plan events.
