Job Summary
The Student Engagement Coordinator is responsible for developing, delivering and evaluating programs and services with the FNHL Longhouse to support Indigenous student learning, personal and professional development, and providing leadership opportunities that strengthen and enrich the student experience at UBC. The Student Engagement Coordinator is an integral role in facilitating the connection between students, faculties, campus services and community organizations. The Student Engagement Coordinator uses their full understanding of student experiences for effective strategic planning and implementation of engagement and partnership initiatives to develop a vibrant and inclusive community at the First Nations Longhouse. The Student Engagement Coordinator addresses key areas identified in the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan as well as the UBC Strategic documents.
Organizational Status
The position reports to the Manager, Student Engagement and Community Programs and Outreach and at times the Associate Director and the Director. The Student Engagement Coordinator is expected to work in strong collaboration with FNHL staff and all campus partners who work to support Indigenous students.
Work Performed
  • Maintains regular office hours for student drop-ins and appointments to support students in crisis, either personal or academic and advises on available academic options and refers to Early Alert or UBC Counselling Services and other on and off-campus additional community supports. Provides information on social and health services available to Indigenous students.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff from across campus, Student Financial Assistance and Awards, Enrollment Services and Awards, and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, participate in the administration, adjudication, and recommendation of students for Indigenous bursaries, scholarships, fellowships, and awards as requested.
  • Organizing facilitators to bring workshops into the longhouse.
  • Remains current with student engagement best practices to enhance the student experience.
  • Prepares and implements intervention plans to work with First Year Indigenous students that can improve retention
  • Fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion for all Indigenous students to the Longhouse community by providing opportunities to build networks, learning communities, and/or simply to connect with peers.
  • Other work as time permits:
  • Works with the Manager of Student Engagement and Community Programs, the FNHL Collegia Coordinator, the BTS coordinator, and other FNHL staff (10%) to
  • Supports other campus initiatives arising from the 2020 Indigenous Strategic Plan.
  • Works carefully with the Elder in Residence to provide transportation to and from the Longhouse FNHL engagements (Tuesday lunches, territory welcomes).
  • Prepares reports, publications and other work as required.
  • Monitors Indigenous First Year Retention statistics and develops programs that can improve retention of first-year Indigenous students (20%).
  • Plan, Coordinate, manage, and participate in the Indigenous Graduation Ceremonies
  • Manages the development, implementation and evaluation of FNHL student engagement programs (30%)
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Services to participate in high school and off-campus student visits to ensure visitors feel welcomed and understand the support provided to Indigenous students by the FNHL Longhouse
  • Research Indigenous student retention factors and the types of programs and services that improve retention
  • Monitors academic reporting systems for early alert to students’ performance and academic progress, thus identifying and providing timely interventions for those who are in need.
  • Occasional work assigned by the Manager of Student Engagement and Community Programs.
  • Work collaboratively on social media strategy and content for student engagement events and programming.
  • Connects with UBC Health and Wellbeing to bring support for student mental health well-being into the Longhouse
  • Manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of FNHL academic programs that improve student retention (20%)
  • Works collaboratively with the Indigenous Collegium Coordinator and other FNHL Student Engagement and Community Programs teams to concurrently deliver programs and services to Indigenous students
  • Develop, write, edit, and oversee the design, publication and distribution of advising materials (print and electronic) and provide clear communication to students, staff, faculty and departments through a wide range of mediums including email, web, print, phone, and in-person about student initiatives, programs and services.
  • Works with campus partners to design and deliver educational workshops, training or other professional development sessions for Indigenous students.
  • Collaborate with other UBC campus partners to facilitate Jump Start, Orientation, Imagine Day and New to Campus Days.

  • Provide analytical reports on data relevant to student needs, retention, attrition, student success, persistence and graduation rates
  • Develops relationships with faculty student advisors and collaborates where possible to engage in systematic follow-up and investigates and works to resolve more complex student issues to optimize student success.
  • Responsibilities include, with stated approximate percentages of time spent:
  • Works with the FNHL and Residential School Dialogue Centre Cultural Support Worker in the implementation and ongoing support of the Elders Program.
  • Making direct connections with students with complex needs who may be at risk of leaving post-secondary education.
  • Works with faculties to develop, implement, and monitor the FNHL tutoring program.
  • Selects, trains, and supervises student workers in the planning, organization and implementation of FNHL programs and events.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires a sophisticated level of judgment, tact, discretion and initiative. Errors in judgment with the internal or external stakeholders could have a negative impact on the First Nations House of Learning and the University, resulting in legal suits, poor public relations, financial costs or loss of credibility. The incumbent will be expected to respond well to unexpected circumstances and exercise good independent judgment. Must demonstrate exceptional public relations and interpersonal skills in dealing with the high-profile members of the Indigenous community, the university, staff and faculty, senior administrators and members of the government. Inappropriate or errant communication of sensitive issues could have a serious impact and legal implications.
Supervision Received
This position is supervised and works under the direction of the Manager, Student Engagement and Community Programs. Work is reviewed for achievement of University goals and soundness of advice and judgment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven ability to organize events and coordinate student development programs.
  • Highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking.
  • Experience in a Windows-based environment, good knowledge of Internet technologies and willingness to learn to use new systems.
  • Due to the nature of the program and in accordance with Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, Indigenous applicants (First Nations, Inuit, or Metis) with a deep understanding and lived experience with common Indigenous ways of knowing are encouraged to apply.
  • Class 5 BC Drivers License. Must be able to operate a vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Experience working either professionally or as a student in a post-secondary environment in program development, and program management.
  • Knowledge of the field of leadership development, career development, student development and related literature and research is an asset.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and plan ahead to effectively resolve problems.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Deep understanding of systemic and personal barriers that Indigenous students face in accessing and pursuing postsecondary education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.
  • Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, respectful, and effective manner.
  • Previous university experience (or equivalent) would be an asset. Previous experience with supervision of student staff (including hiring, training and performance management) would be an asset.
  • Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member.
  • Experience developing, planning, and implementing ideas collaboratively with stakeholder groups.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in an intercultural environment.
