Job Summary
The primary focus of this position will be customer service, dealing with all customer interactions in Chemistry Stores, as well as, ensuring the stockroom is prepared and well organized for customers. The secondary focus of this position will be to serve as backup for the Receiver and Storeperson (biobar), with coverage for other storeperson positions during absences and peak periods.
Organizational Status
The Storeperson reports to the Stores Manager but will need to work closely with all Stores staff.
Work Performed
  • Participates in processing of waste chemicals or materials for disposal.
  • Greets and serves customers, handles customer requests for chemicals, gases and equipment; prepares and records sales receipts, performs data entry.
  • Recommends and implements projects or system changes to improve Stores operation.
  • Performs physical inventory counts/cycle counts and related inventory data entry tasks in Planon as required.
  • Acts as first point of contact and responds to incoming phone calls enquiries and e-mails; handles or forwards as appropriate.
  • Participates in safe storage and handling of chemicals and compressed gases.
  • Dispenses various chemicals, which involves familiarity with hazards and wearing of personal protection equipment.
  • Picks orders from incoming stock requests through Planon system and prepares orders for pickup.
  • Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.
  • May be asked to instruct and train stores staff and student term appointees.
  • Receives and signs for goods when Receiver is not available to do so.
  • Serves as the primary backup for Receiver and Storeperson (biobar) positions to provide absence and other coverage.
  • Ensures stockroom shelves are well stocked, organized and goods are labeled. Includes moving and unpacking of pallets.
  • Maintains general organization of stock/shelves throughout Stores. Includes updating inventory system storage locations and entering stock adjustments when required.
  • Verifies received stock goods, prepares and affixes labels and/or barcodes to stock; shelves or stores stock.
Working Conditions
The incumbent will work within Chemistry Stores and other areas of Chemistry complex (gas cylinder storage area, solvent storage area, research labs, etc.). Some areas (e.g. solvent storage area) expose workers to potentially hazardous fumes, vapours, etc. Personal protective equipment is required to be worn for certain tasks and will be provided by the department. Workers must exercise caution in the daily execution of their tasks. May be required to deliver or return goods from other departments within the walking core. Employee must successfully complete the Chemical Safety and Fire Extinguisher training courses offered by UBC as well all required Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations certifications.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inventory errors causing shortages in supplies could result in canceling and rescheduling of teaching labs or delays in research projects, resulting in financial loss. Errors in Stores related duties could result in hazardous incidents or situations affecting staff and customers (e.g. dispensing of chemicals into wrong containers).
Supervision Received
Supervised by the Stores Manager but will need to work closely with the other Storepersons. The person will work from written and oral instructions and according to standard operating procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
High School Graduation: some post-secondary education in Science/Chemistry preferred, or in the fields of inventory control; warehousing; materials management; receiving; purchasing; or chemical safety. Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Laboratory or stores operations experience are both applicable. Experience in receiving and/or purchasing would be an asset.
Skills
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job (e.g., heavy lifting and moving heavy objects, standing, working at heights). Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to maintain clean, orderly, well-organized work area.
  • Experience with ERP systems, specifically Workday and/or Planon, would be an asset.
  • Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to effectively perform inventory control procedures.
  • Ability to use pallet jacks, hand trucks and other stock movement equipment.
  • Excellent customer service skills are essential.
  • Good communication skills (written and oral) to facilitate interaction with faculty, staff and students.
  • WHMIS, TDG and First Aid certification may be required if not already complete.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent punctuality and reliable attendance expected.
  • Must be familiar with, or be able to learn, current relevant safety regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
