The Senior Manager, Recruitment is responsible for the marketing, recruitment development and implementation of recruitment and program promotion initiatives, policies, processes and systems designed to attract applicants and yield high-caliber students to UBC Sauder's professional graduate degree programs. This includes providing leadership, direction and guidance to the recruitment team in the RHL Graduate School on the development, implementation, execution and assessment of the unit's strategic plan, policies, processes and systems for marketing, recruitment, admission, and prospective student services to attract and enroll highly-qualified applicants for the graduate programs. These programs are critical to UBC Sauder's reputation, resource generation and success, and the Senior Manager is directly tied to annual revenue generation for UBC and is responsible for meeting significant annual recruitment targets in a competitive marketplace.
The Senior Manager, Recruitment is a member of the senior management team in the Recruitment and Admissions office and works closely with the senior management team to develop the Graduate Office overall strategic plan.
The incumbent brings a strategic, sales, processes and data-driven mindset, and technology-enabled approach to all recruitment initiatives.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Director, Recruitment and Admissions. Receives direction from the Assistant Dean, Robert H. Lee Graduate School, and other members of the RHL senior leadership/management team.
The position is highly visible to the external community and has continuous contact with the university constituency at large.
Work Performed
  • Identifies trends and leverages knowledge, data and competitive insights to develop creative, customized recruitment and promotion strategies.
  • Working with UBC IT, determines, develops, and monitors the appropriate information systems for unit operations, including new technology implementation, custom applications, training needs, etc.
  • Responsible and accountable for meeting key performance indicators (KPI's) aligned to unit's and UBC Sauder strategic goals.
  • Represents UBC Sauder at public functions. Participates on relevant committees at the university or on external organizations that facilitate the goals of the unit.
  • In close consultation with the Director, develops, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of recruitment policies and procedures to achieve strategic enrolment objectives for the graduate programs. This involves consultation and collaboration with the Dean's Office, RHL Student Experience team and the Business Career Centre in the development of policies and holistic evaluation criteria.
  • Evaluates longitudinal effectiveness of recruitment policies and evaluation criteria for the selection, enrolment, and retention.
  • Participates in the development of the strategic plan for the Graduate Office.
  • Researches and recommends innovative ways to recruit student talent in Canada and internationally. Works closely with the Director, Recruitment and Admissions, Manager, Recruitment and Admissions Operations, Recruitment team and the Student Experience team to ensure the school's quality expectations are met.
  • Partners with the Director to develop and manage the recruitment operating budget and is responsible for tracking and monitoring resources allocations.
  • Maintains and reports on key performance indicators and individual team performance. Able to recommend new strategies at a strategic and tactical level and ensures team achieves metrics to support the school strategic plan.
  • Leverages market, vendor, agencies and competitors intelligence to recommend scholarship strategies and yield tactics.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of effective admissions and recruitment strategies to ensure marketing, promotions, recruitment and admissions policies and procedures are effective and competitive, and lead to the enrollment of highly qualified applicants.
  • Develops and enhances relations with faculty and employees in numerous campus departments and within UBC Sauder.
  • Fosters excellence in the development, execution and delivery of recruitment programs and services.
  • Provides leadership in establishing admissions policies and procedures that foster equity, diversity and inclusiveness in the graduate school community.
  • Contributes directly to the development of policy and priorities of the unit.
  • Develops plans and creates recruitment and market best practices and sales tactics aligned with the goals and reputation of the RHL graduate school.
  • Advises and supports top tier students with the intent to secure their attendance at UBC over other big brand competitors.
  • Develops plans for direct student recruitment activities in the highest profile and challenging markets, including speaking at large-scale events, building partnerships and leading a team of high-achieving recruiters.
  • Works closely with the Director and the recruitment team and oversees the process of key recruitment markets selection.
  • Participates in RHL Admissions Committee and is a key contributor to the selection process for all students admitted to professional graduate programs. Able to substitute for the Director in Admissions Committee decision-making situations.
  • Acts in place of the Director, Recruitment and Admissions in their absence, providing leadership and support to the unit.
  • In close consultation with the Assistant Dean and Director, develops, implements, and assesses effective strategic marketing and recruiting plans that will result in the recruitment and yield of high calibre direct entry and transfer students from BC, Canada and diverse regions around the world to meet UBC and UBC Sauder enrolment and retention goals. Guides/coaches the recruitment team to execute and implement these plans.
  • Provides leadership and day to day managerial direction and guidance to the RHL Recruitment team through coaching, guiding, modeling key behaviors/ strategies, encouraging dialog and problem-solving.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders in the graduate school and may present on recruitment key performance indicators and market trends and news.
  • Oversees various student recruitment activities and events.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Assumes responsibility for special projects assigned by Directors, Assistant Dean or the Dean's office.
  • Maintains a high level of knowledge of current educational trends and practices in Canada and around the world, as well as keeps up-to-date with socioeconomic and political changes.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Poor decisions will have a long-term negative effect on the marketability of the programs and adversely impact the reputation of UBC Sauder and the RHL Graduate School. Errors in judgment and failure to enroll a high-caliber student body may negatively affect the overall image of the school as an institute for superior management educations and/or loss of exceptional students to competitor schools. Failure to provide sound decisions could result in a loss of confidence of UBC Sauder and undermine the Dean's efforts to raise the UBC Sauder's global ranking and reputation to ensure sustained access to resources and success in the long run. Decision-making is based on a thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of the UBC and UBC Sauder. The incumbent exercises considerable judgment and must demonstrate tact and discretion.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Director, Recruitment and Admissions. May receive guidance from the Assistant Dean, RHL Graduate School on specific work projects as assigned.
Supervision Given
Manages a team and is responsible for hiring, discipline, evaluation and termination. Directs, guides, sets goals and coaches the team to achieve unit goals and outcomes. Manages the team's professional development planning.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four to five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
