OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY: The Senior Interior Designer is responsible for independently executing all phases of the production of a project. With a clear understanding of MAED. design goals and expectations, they act as mentor and coach to their design colleagues and contribute to the design dialogue of the office. They utilize an innovative and inspired approach to facilitate client and operators’ requests, needs and desires. They use their proven ability to see projects to completion within the context of producing an exceptional MAED. design.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
CONCEPT
- Ensure conceptual direction is cohesive with project brief, geographical location and MAED’s aesthetic language
- Review with Project Leader | Studio Lead | Creative Strategist | Principal when required.
- Prior experience with hospitality projects from start to completion (hotels, spa, restaurants, retail, high end residential)
- Ability to present ideas and concepts internally to project team and to client as necessary
- Responsible for development of master planning with guidance from Studio Lead | Creative Strategist
- Responsible for the development of concept design through planning, sketching, rendering.
- Responsible for the Selection of directional images, and finishes to suit project narrative
SCHEMATIC
- Further develop concept design to meet luxury hospitality vision and standards with sketches, 3D SKP renderings, photoshop, thumbnails, plans and the creation of specialty finishes
- Ability to present ideas and concepts internally to project team and to client as necessary
- Refine finish selections and review alternates as necessary put fourth by designers and/or procurement agents
- Review and schedule time with Project Leader | Studio Lead | Creative Strategist | Principal when required
- Ability to schedule design team to meet project deadlines
- Responsible for ensuring project narrative and conceptual direction remains cohesive throughout schematic design phase
- Produce | direct formulation of FF&E direction, suitable for hospitality that meet project requirements
- Direct and review sample ordering and palettes. Research appropriate materials and mentor junior colleagues to do the same
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
- Review and implement necessary changes and additions with for specs, re: FF&E, hardware, plumbing, and architectural finishes.
- Develop drawing package including full design intent of all millwork and custom furniture as per MAED. Office Cad Standards.
- Report to studio lead with any changes or alteration to conceptual vision and provide viable solutions to cater to specific project type
- Review with Project Leader | Studio Lead | Creative Strategist | Principal when required.
- In depth understanding of hospitality FF&E standards in terms of ergonomics and ensuring all materiality meets brand standards
- Assist in any information the Specifications department may require.
- In collaboration with technical team and technical manager, develop a complete drawing package to suit MAED studio standards
- Work closely with design team/technical team to produce complete drawing packages: detailing, elevations and plans as per MAED standards, ensuring they are clear, comprehensive and consistent
- Work closely with client hired procurement agent to organize and produce viable specifications and the ability to value engineer while maintaining project integrity
- Coordinate with outside project consultants such as lighting, MEP, Structural, Signage, kitchen & F&B consultants etc, as necessary to complete a well-coordinated project.
- Input and review specs information re: FF&E, hardware, plumbing, and architectural finishes.
- Expand and refine the approved design language into buildable drawings with expert knowledge of proportion, scale, constructability
- Responsible for leading all project coordination calls with project team with confidence and background knowledge in MEP, lighting, electrical and landscape
- Work with Project Management in the development of specialty custom built items (FF&E and millwork etc.) to ensure quality control
CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION
- Answer vendor/contractor’s questions.
- Provide detailed information as requested by the Project Leader in the development of budgets.
- Mentoring - Share and pass on design knowledge to Junior and Intermediate designers.
- Review Shop Drawings and Submittals
- Work with technical manager to provide site clarifications when necessary.
- Assist in the review of project documentation for quality of design, technical competency and completeness of information.
- Review with Project Manager, Team Leader and Project Leaders mentoring designers
- Able to travel alone or with members of project team as needed during all phases of projects
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS REQUIRED
- Other duties as requested or assigned ie: HR support, Support in the development of PR and Marketing materials
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Expertise in black and white hand rendering skills
- 5+ years of work-related design experience
- Strong ability to visualize FF&E details
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency in: AutoCAD, Revit (an asset), SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, InDesign, 3D rendering and software skills, MS Office
- Excellent communication, time management and organizational skills
- Attention to detail
- BA or Equivalent in Interior Design or Architecture
- Expert problem solving skills
- Strong worth ethic
- Experience working on hospitality, residential, retail, F&B projects
