Parks Canada is looking for a Public Relations and Communications Officer in Manitoba! This posting is for a permanent year-round position working 30 hours a week part-time (0.8 FTE). The position will work from either Winnipeg or St. Andrews at Parks Canada offices.
The day-to-day role of the Public Relations and Communications Officer is incredibly diverse and allows you to play a key role in the promotion and administration of national historic sites and parks in Manitoba.
What does a day in the life of a Public Relations and Communications Officer look like?
Start your day by developing a media pitch and communications plan to announce a new Indigenous programming series at Lower Fort Garry. After lunch, step into a call with our team in Churchill and a film crew looking to document polar bear denning. End your day at The Forks with our team of interpreters as you facilitate a media spot for the evening news.
The next day, you may draft a speech and sequence of events for the upcoming Treaty Commemoration Day at Lower Fort Garry or write a feature for our website about research in Wapusk National Park, or coordinate a news release with a travel trade partner about a new visitor experience at Prince of Wales Fort.
With seven national historic sites and a national park under our team’s administration here in Manitoba, there is no shortage of exciting and interesting projects to be a part of!
If you’re a media-savvy communications professional looking for a creative new challenge, then this just might be the perfect fit for you.
Your application should demonstrate you have the education and experience for the position. Your abilities, knowledge and core competencies required will be evaluated through a written assessment, an interview, and references.
EDUCATION- Graduation with a diploma or degree from a recognized college or university with specialization in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or other discipline relevant to the position or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE- Experience organizing special events such as news conferences and media briefings;
- Experience researching, analyzing, developing, and delivering strategies and plans related to communication and media relations;
- Experience writing and editing communications products such as news releases, media lines, speeches, sequences of events and analytical background material.
- Experience dealing with media;
Those who meet the experience and education criteria as demonstrated in their application will be assessed on the following at a later date:
KNOWLEDGE:- Knowledge of external issues and trends that have an impact on external relations;
- Knowledge of Parks Canada, its mandate, corporate orientation, objectives and programs.
- Ability to deliver products, services and advice in communications, particularly in media relations.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Ability to analyze documents/reports, assess the communications implications and make recommendations;
- Ability to plan and organize the logistics associated with special events, such as news conferences and press briefings;
- Thinking things through;
- Demonstrating integrity and respect;
- Working effectively with others;
- Showing initiative and being action oriented.
- Maintenance of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License
- Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance including fingerprints;
- Be available to work at various locations across Manitoba South, including the Forks National Historic Site, Riel House National Historic Site and Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site;
- Willingness to work shift work, irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
- Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
- Willingness to travel, including overnight, off site and/or weekends
- Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform when required;
