Position Overview

The Project Controller is a role focused on supporting multiple projects ranging from $1 million to $4 billion in accounting and finance functions. In many cases, Project Controllers are directly assigned to our largest ($200 million and over) and most important projects. They act as Chief Financial Officers and trusted advisors to operations managers and senior management. The main objective of this position is to manage and develop the careers of the business team members, establish trust and credibility with senior management, and provide meaningful insight and accurate analysis to these same managers for decision-making purposes. The position of Senior Project Controller also requires strong leadership skills, an unwavering ambition for continuous improvement, and extensive technical and personal skills.

District Overview

Eastern Canada District's projects include highways, bridges, mass transit, mine site development & open pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind-power plants, dams & industrial. The serve the construction and mining industries and operates in Eastern Canada.

Location

This position is based in Ottawa.

Responsibilities

• Drives continuous improvement throughout the organization and is a proponent for positive change
• Analyzes and effectively communicates financial results of the project to upper level management
• Earns trust, credibility, and buy in of processes from Operations team to create better cohesion and clear communication within the organization
• Reviews all project and estimate cash flows, contract terms, and change orders in detail for financial risks and opportunities
• Manages the division of responsibilities and communication between various project & home office departments
• Understands financial reporting - including the upstream effects of reporting to other areas of the organization
• Monitors results of new processes, trouble-shoots failures and issues, and presents solutions to unsolicited problems
• Creates an inviting workplace that motivates and challenges each team member to achieve career goals and strive for opportunities
• Understands, substantiates, and reconciles all financial reports monthly and annually
• Understands the needs of the organization, aims to bring in high quality talent, and continually develops team members through critical conversations and performance reviews
• Effectively utilizes the right data, reports, and tools for risk analysis and benchmarking
• Recognizes when and who to escalate specific conversations/issues

Qualifications

• Proven track record of successfully developing or managing a team preferred
• Effective communication (both oral and written), organization, and interpersonal skills
• High level of professionalism and standards
• Financial or accounting experience in construction or engineering industry preferred
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel
• Ability to balance multiple tasks and responsibilities
• 7 - 10 + years of financial/data analysis experience
• Knowledge of or familiarity with principal field business management systems: SAP, CMIS, PMIS and Prolog (P.O. and A/P) preferred
• Managerial experience
• CPA, MBA, or public accounting experience preferred
• Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills
• Must be able to freely access all parts of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments
• Strong working knowledge of accounting including: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tax
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, and/or an equivalent degree is require

• Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
