Job Summary


The Centre for Climate Justice (CCJ) Program and Engagement Manager will be responsible for overseeing the operation of the CCJ at UBC, including the development and management of CCJ campus and community engagement activities, events, communications, and outreach across UBC and to external partners. The Manager will work with the Research Manager and co-directors to support strategic planning and performance tracking and the long-term success of the Centre.


Organizational Status


The Manager will work with CCJ co-directors and Research Manager, and coordinate with CCJ governance bodies and multiple stakeholders from Indigenous communities, non-profit, academic, and government sectors. Position will be required to provide non-academic supervision to graduate and undergraduate students and community members in the completion of their roles. The position works with wide latitude, performing work independently with minimal guidance. Works closely with members of the Arts Communications team and Arts Communications Network, and various campus communicators. The position will report directly to co-directors.


Work Performed


Program Management


  • In collaboration with the co-directors & research manager, provides leadership, sets direction and oversees campus and community engagement activities for CCJ at UBC, including developing program structure, budget and timelines, assigning resources, tracking progress, implementation, and reporting.
  • Negotiates and establishes contracts for services with suppliers.
  • Reviews agreements between CCJ and external agencies including funding agencies, university and government departments in consultation with principal investigators, UILO, and/or the co-directors and resolves discrepancies to completion.
  • Ensures and facilitates communication between CCJ and other research and program clusters across UBC and with other partnering universities and institutions.
  • Identifies opportunities for knowledge mobilization, policy intervention, and collaboration across disciplines at UBC and with other universities, institutions and organizations.
  • Facilitates meetings on program development for campus and community engagement.
  • Prepares and monitors timetables and work plans.
  • Works with Research Manager and co-directors to prepare progress reports, including annual activity and performance reports.


Fundraising


  • Identifies funding opportunities for CCJ campus and community engagement programming
  • Leads the reporting process for non-research funding, with support of other CCJ staff.
  • Leads the development and implementation of CCJ fundraising strategy to ensure long-term organizational success, in collaboration with UBC DAE, CCJ Research Manager, and co-directors.


Outreach and Communications


  • Manages public relations activities in conjunction with Research Manager and co-directors, as well as senior university administrators, faculty and outside organizations, including the government, non-profit sector partners, and research groups.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Provides input, in conjunction other CCJ staff and leadership, on the design and development of communication strategies and promotional materials.
  • Works within Arts Communications guidelines to develop, write, and edit a wide range of communication materials for CCJ including newsletters, blog posts, advertising copy, and social media content. Identifies the most appropriate communication channel for communication messages and distributes and implements as needed. Provides research and fact-checking support where needed.
  • Works with members of the UBC academic and research community to increase community engagement and outreach in CCJ and UBC research.
  • Works with co-directors and Research Manager to identify key stakeholders for outreach and collaboration, leading outreach and collaborations with partners (including forming agreements).
  • Develops strong rapport and relationships with all stakeholders groups, allowing for open and constructive communication and achievement of the university’s and CCJ’s goals.
  • Works with staff and Centre leadership to assess (and reassess) CCJ communications needs.
  • Works with researchers, students and staff to promote CCJ and build partnerships.
  • Liaises with community agencies, funding bodies, and governmental representatives as required.
  • Manages the participation of collaborative partners in CCJ and UBC events, organizes recruiting efforts, and manages volunteers, presenters, speakers and committee members.
  • Plans, leads and participates in events, public meetings, information sessions and planning sessions tied to CCJ and the university’s climate change and sustainability work.
  • Responds to requests and inquiries from potential partners and collaborators, and conducts complex and sensitive correspondence with regard to CCJ collaborations.


Consequence of Error/Judgement


This is a senior research and facilitation position that plays a critical role in the success of CCJ at UBC. Work is governed by broad objectives and procedures and requires initiative and professional decision-making. Makes judgment calls, decisions and recommendations on all aspects of CCJ programming, engagement and outreach. Accountable for the successful development of CCJ programs at UBC. Work requires communication with UBC senior administration, faculty and researchers as well as CCJ team members and partner organizations. Incorrect communication could cause delays or otherwise injure research and program activities.

Supervision Given


  • Supervises graduate and undergraduate students and community members to plan and develop non-academic research and training opportunities.
  • Will be responsible for supervision and hiring of additional staff as the Centre grows.
  • Coordinates with other CCJ staff and leadership the appropriate tasks for graduate and undergraduate assistants.
  • Hires, supervises any temporary staff and consultants as needed.
  • Provides direction to CCJ Program and Administrative Assistant.


Minimum Qualifications


Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications


A post-graduate degree or an equivalent professional designation, with a solid understanding of climate change in general and ability to understand conceptually the objectives and focus areas of CCJ mandate. Proven ability to work successfully with a wide range of groups and individuals, including community groups, researchers, the public sector and multiple levels of government. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to effectively lead and plan meetings. Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations. Demonstrated organizational skills and well developed problem solving and conceptual abilities. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate research and technical reports and proposals. Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills. Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources. Ability to identify, obtain, and effectively manage organizational resources (e.g., people, materials, assets, budgets). Proven management and strategic planning skills. Intermediate computer skills: Outlook, Word, Excel, Wordpress.
