Job Overview


Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is seeking a result driven Engineer to join our Renewable Generation team in the role of Plant Engineer/Officer at our Timmins, ON location.


Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the Plant Engineer/Officer contributes and performs work that is necessary for the continuous safe, efficient and economical commissioning and operation of hydroelectric generating station assets.

Key Accountabilities


  • Assist with the preparation of drawings, technical specifications, construction estimates, Inspection-Test Plans and Commissioning Plans.
  • Conduct mechanical engineering assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designs, and evaluations for continuous safe, efficient and economical commissioning and operation of hydroelectric turbine generators, turbine regulating equipment, flow control equipment, lifting equipment and associated auxiliary plant systems (Service Water Systems, Fire Protection Systems, Compressed Air Systems, Drainage and Dewatering systems, Domestic Water and Sewage Handling Systems, HVAC, Oil Handling Systems and Elevators).
  • Respond to emergencies, equipment failures or unsatisfactory performance, conduct field investigations, prepare technical reports, and recommend actions.
  • Support project management activities (e.g., front-end planning, cost estimating, quality monitoring).
  • Provide technical information, as directed, for hydroelectric station maintenance, operations, performance, design and commissioning.
  • Participate and contribute to Pre-start health and safety reviews, investigation of safety or technical incidents.
  • Participate in technical studies.
  • Serve on project teams or task groups.
  • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and government agencies as required.
  • Prepare plans, standards and technical procedures for inspection, maintenance and asset-life management programs.


EDUCATION


  • 4-year university degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Eligibility to become a Professional Engineer in Ontario an Asset


Qualifications


  • Exposure to working in an industrial environment with rotating machinery, materials, welding, regulated pressure boundary and field trades support.
  • Requirement to travel via road, airplane, float plane, helicopter, boat on short notice, up to 25% of time (though actual amount of travel is normally minimal in nature).
  • Valid Class G Ontario driving license (or equivalent) in good standing.
  • Field Engineer experience is an asset.
  • Ability to independently problem solve with methods and tools required for mechanical engineering applications.
  • Experience using AutoCAD is an asset.
  • Experience with planning and conducting assessments, testing, studies, inspections, investigations, design, evaluations, construction monitoring & maintenance of mechanical works associated with generating stations.
  • Eligibility to be registered with PEO as an EIT & committed to obtaining & continuously maintaining an Unrestricted P. Eng. certification in good standing in the Province of Ontario while in this position is an asset
  • High integrity, upholding company values including H&S, and protection of the environment.
  • Proven track record on delivering results.
  • Experience and ability as a team player to understand and manage the interrelationships of various internal and external groups in order to facilitate objectives and ensure projects satisfy stakeholder requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable leading meetings and giving presentations.
  • Exposure or knowledge of working in an electricity generating facility (hydropower), is considered an asset.
  • Theoretical knowledge of or exposure to the OH&S Act and Regulations, especially for Industrial Establishments (Ont Reg 851) & Construction (Ont Reg 213) and various codes and standards associated with mechanical engineering and application of their requirements.
  • Have a strong interest in fast-paced, challenging work environments where showing initiative and self-motivation are assets.
  • 2 years Mechanical Engineering experience in hydro-electric generation, else transferable experience in an industrial setting
