Newcomer Outreach and Engagement Officer


Under the direction of the Manager, Newcomer Training Projects the incumbent supports Mohawk College’s Programs for Newcomers by recruiting and engaging newcomer clientele in the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC), Enhanced Language Training (ELT), Occupation-specific Language Training (OSLT) programs, Workplace Preparation Program (WPP), Bridge to Work in Community Services (BTW), and other newcomer-focused training projects.


The incumbent provides a high quality standard of service, recognizing the diverse range of needs of the adult newcomer population. The incumbent will work collaboratively with faculty and staff to promote all programs for newcomers within the Hamilton community. The key responsibility of this position is to provide appropriate information about the programs to partner agencies within Hamilton, and to plan and implement marketing and engagement strategies for the purposes of promoting growth of the aforementioned programs.


Responsibilities


Duties include, but are not limited to:


Community Outreach Activities


  • Coordinate and facilitate regular information sessions for potential clients.
  • Promote all Programs for Newcomers through community relations and partnerships.
  • Receive incoming inquiries from the community and triage as appropriate.
  • Provide appropriate information on program requirements and benefits to potential clients.
  • Monitor Mohawk College’s internal programs and external activities for promotion opportunities.
  • Maintain Learn English at Mohawk Facebook, Twitter, and other social media channels and website.


Marketing Activities


  • Develop and share appropriate marketing materials to promote ongoing programs, workshops and special events.
  • Maintain “Programs for Newcomers” website, including LINC student blog posts.
  • Collaborate with Programs for Newcomers team in developing and implementing outreach and engagement plan for prospective students and other stakeholders.
  • Create and execute social media and general marketing plans for course offerings, special events and community events.


Promote And Coordinate Activities To Engage Students


  • Support program staff in planning for internal workshops and events that enhance the student experience.
  • Promote internal events and learning opportunities to students through social media, presentations, and e-newsletter distribution.
  • Support LINC student council, Newcomer Voices student committee, Lunch and Learns, Common Hour, Wellness Connect, and other student engagement activities.


Qualifications

The Successful Applicant Must Have


  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, or other design applications.
  • A minimum of three year diploma in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Exceptional customer service experience is a must. Position requires highly developed communications and promotional skills to support and facilitate outreach and marketing activities, discuss and resolve problems, and prepare documents and reports.
  • Knowledge of anti-oppressive practice or comparable concepts is an asset.
  • Experience working with Newcomers to Canada.
  • Ex eptional attention to detail, flexible and able to adapt to changing demands and pressures.
  • Knowledge of content web management systems.
  • Experience managing social media and with media relations.
  • Fluency in a second language (Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, Chinese, Farsi) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
  • Able to w ork independently and within a team.
  • Extensive experience in community outreach and involvement with the newcomer community in Hamilton.
  • Available to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Project management skills that include organizing, multi-tasking, prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
