A Day in the Life...
The Communications Officer reports to the Dean within the Faculty of Social Sciences department. This position is responsible for developing and implementing marketing, communications, media/public relations programs, and initiatives to drive recruitment for the Faculty. In addition, the Communications Officer promotes Faculty's teaching, research, academic programs, and service achievements. This individual regularly liaises with the Faculty’s Marketing and Communications Liaison Manager and the Strategic Initiatives Coordinator to coordinate faculty, departmental/centre events, and conferences. The Communications Officer/Specialist will also establish and maintain networks with various community members and internal stakeholders.
As the Communications Officer, you will:
- Conduct ongoing market research, explore new approaches and provide recommendation to undergraduate and graduate recruitment strategies;
- Build user engagement on official Faculty social media accounts, monitor the faculty's presence on these accounts and investigate social media trends;
- Provide support to virtual and in-person events, including but not limited to, promotional materials, written content, photography, and social media coverage
- Hire, coordinate and guide student interns and/or students on placement in the Dean's Office, for the purpose of developing and producing various communication outputs;
- Liaise with Marketing and Communications to develop and execute a marketing and communications plan for the Faculty of Social Science to promote and increase the visibility of the faculty’s academic program;
- Act as the main contact for Faculty on new technologies, systems, and platforms in relations to recruitment events and student-facing communication systems
- Design material to be used for recruitment in alignment with the over-arching Brock University brand and marketing strategies as provided by Marketing and Communications in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders;
- Provide support to all Departments and Centres within the Faculty in maintaining and improving web sites while developing and offering training/assistance as required;
- Work with the Associate Dean, Undergraduate and Recruitment to plan and implement public events such as March Break tours and Ontario Universities' Fair;
- Attend on and off campus events to represent the faculty; create, capture, and broadcast live content through social media platforms; and
What you need to Succeed…
- A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of work experience in marketing, communications, or public relations, with proven success in executive effective communications and social media strategies;
- Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills;
- Committed to ongoing learning to remain ahead of changes in technology, social media platforms, marketing/communication, and other emerging fields.
- A highly collaborate and consultive style, with the ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team;
- Excellent understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Content Management System (WordPress), Adobe Creative Suite and social media sites with sound knowledge of digital/social media content platforms;
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work performed; and
- An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (i.e., Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Graphic Design);
- Strong project management, brand management, and marketing research skills, and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects from conception to implementation and work effectively with others at all levels;
- Demonstrated prior experience managing and creating website content;
Preferred or Asset Skills…
- Experience working in a post-secondary environment; and
- Familiarity with Web Accessibility standards and designing for inclusive experiences.
Salary and Benefit Information
- Job Grade (K), Salary Scale ($54,348 - $73,171)*;
- This position includes full comprehensive benefits, pension, and tuition waiver.
*The salary range indicated is representative of all positions evaluated at this level. Actual salary is determined by assessing related skills, experience, internal equity and market competitiveness, subject to available budget.
