Summary
Be a part of collaborative strategies to address the root causes of poverty issues through community engagement with community members with lived experience, community partners and local employers, creating communications that increase awareness of the Poverty Task Force's work and providing administrative support.
Responsibilities
Community Engagement:
- Coordinate outreach and engagement activities to increase awareness of and involvement in the PTF’s work, such as facilitating PTF trainings, coordinating volunteer opportunities for community members, tabling at events and putting up posters in the community.
- Engage community partners and key players in the regular updating of ongoing PTF initiatives, such as the community weather response for individuals experiencing homelessness and service provider access guides.
- Support the PTF Director with developing and formatting presentations and occasionally present on the PTF’s work to community groups, social service agencies, and organizations.
- Occasionally represent the PTF at meetings or sit on committees, such as the City of Guelph Transit Advisory Committee.
- Support the PTF Director with answering and responding to inquiries from partners, organizations, and community members by phone, email and in-person.
- Facilitate meaningful engagement and support the involvement of community members with lived expertise of poverty in the Community Voices group, PTF meetings, and in activities, such as speaking engagements, trainings, and advocacy and awareness opportunities.
- Support coordination of local employers in the living wage employer program by tracking participation and involving employers in outreach and engagement activities, such as events, meetings and recognition opportunities.
Communications:
- Regularly update new information to the PTF’s website, e-newsletter and social media.
- Support the PTF Director in producing a wide array of written and visual communications to support the PTF’s work, such as press releases, backgrounders, posters, infographics, key
- Support the PTF Director with identifying relevant content for PTF communications and
- Coordinate and provide writing, editing and formatting support for PTF outbound communications, such as website, social media, e-newsletters, fact sheets and reports.
- Support the PTF Director with identifying and developing opportunities to promote the PTF’s
- Messages and speaking points.
- Work, such as through impact stories, media engagement, and promotional materials.
Administrative Support:
- Provide administrative support for PTF committees and meetings, including coordinating meeting materials, ordering and picking up food and beverage, supporting scheduling, monitoring work plans and taking meeting minutes.
- Provide logistical and planning support for PTF events, including liaising with venues and caterers, managing invitations and registration, preparing materials, event set-up and supporting in-person and virtual delivery of events.
- Support the PTF Director with tracking and updating monthly expenses and coordinate petty cash purchases and expenses like peer participation supports and honoraria.
- Support the creation and updating of key PTF documents, such as practices, contact lists, ongoing media monitoring, and ensure digital files are kept up to date and well organized.
Qualifications and requirements
- Access to reliable transportation is necessary – role requires travel within Guelph and Wellington on occasion for activities, such as meeting with community members and picking up supplies and food for meetings or events.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to take initiative, prioritize and pay attention to detail, accuracy, timelines and quality of work
- Demonstrated problem solving skills used to identify issues and ability to take initiative to address them
- Advanced computer skills including comfort with using Office365 and Google suite and experience generating content and digital communications with design tools like Piktochart and platforms like WordPress, Mailchimp, and Twitter.
- Strong understanding of poverty issues with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and anti-oppression
- Relevant post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of relevant lived or work experience, education or training
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with people and groups coming from a wide range of experiences
- Experience with event coordination and logistics for both in person and virtual events using platforms such as Zoom is an asset.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience with community engagement and/or communications
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision with reliable work ethic
- Experience liaising with media and developing communication resources, like press releases and key messaging, is an asset.
- Experience successfully using social media and email communications for relationship building, outreach, and promotion is an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communicator with strong facilitation and presentation skills
