Medical Director – Canada
Position SummaryReporting to the General Manager – Canada, and a member of the Local Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Medical Director is responsible for all aspects of the Medical function and across our therapeutic areas in Reproductive Medicine & Maternal Health, Gastroenterology & the Microbiome and Uro-Oncology for Ferring Canada.Leading the Medical team, and collaborating with cross-functional partners, the Medical Director provides medical and scientific expertise, overseeing Key Opinion Leader (KOL) and Health Care Practitioner (HCP) engagement and Local clinical trials, ensuring launch readiness of pipeline products, as well as supporting overall business objectives. Collaborating and contributing to Medical initiatives within Ferring’s global Medical community, and as part of the regional Medical Team for Europe, Latin America and Canada (ELAC), there are opportunities to share and shape internal best practices. Job FunctionThe Medical Director is a hands-on, leadership role. The incumbent will identify, develop and implement Medical initiatives and solutions, including local delivery of global projects and programs. It requires, therefore, broad and deep Medical expertise and strong business acumen, as well as the ability to flex from strategic thinking to tactical execution. Areas of accountability include:
- Maintaining and monitoring budget expenditures ensuring compliance with established parameters.
- Overseeing the development and/or presentation of clinical materials for Advisory Boards, Speaker Training, Payers and HTA decision makers, and other presentations.
- Leading therapeutic area Medical teams, including Therapeutic Area Managers, and indirectly, Medical Science Liaisons, to provide customers with targeted medical and scientific information on the appropriate utilization of Ferring products and with more general information about their therapeutic area and disease state.
- Managing local efforts in the development of therapeutic area clinical plans that meet long- and short-term strategic product development objectives, including assessment of Medical needs and market opportunities.
- Driving advocacy and thought-leader outreach and development; develops professional relationships with clinical opinion leaders and investigators.
- Reporting monthly to Business Review committee regarding progress of plans and projects.
- Collaborating closely with Regulatory and QA to support various initiatives as needed (e.g. review of product monographs).
- Managing, coaching, leading and developing Medical direct reports, and monitoring the development of other Medical team members through functional People Managers, as required.
- Directing the effective execution of post-Marketing clinical plans within approved budgets and time lines, including publication and launch plans, creation of medical information materials, review of promotional material and medical communications, and identification of problems and corrective action.
Requirements
EDUCATION
- International educational credentials must be independently assessed for Canadian equivalency
- Medical Doctorate or Science-related PhD is required – MD, preferred
- Specialty medical training – focus as GI, Reproductive Medicine & Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology or Uro-Oncology – also preferred
- Ongoing Medical learning and professional development is expected
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years’ experience in progressive Medical and/or clinical roles in the pharmaceutical is a mandatory minimum
- 3+ years’ people management experience, required
- Medical experience must include field-based work with KOLs and HCPs
- Related experience within a global organization is preferred
- Participation in, or leadership of, reginal / global cross-functional projects is desirable

- Speaks, writes and presents with fluency in English; bilingualism (French/English) considered an asset
- Identifies, develops, champions and/or implements innovative solutions to enhance patient experience, HCP requirements and/or business needs
- Demonstrates exceptional analytical skills (quantitative, and qualitative), and problem-solving abilities.
- Collaborates effectively within teams and across functions / business units, including Regional and Global groups.
- Utilizes systems and tools with proficiency and supports data driven decisions
- Applies strategic thinking to develop a range of solutions
- Plans and executes Medical strategies and tactics to achieve business objectives.
- Delivers effective and impactful medical, scientific and business communications, both written and verbal, including exceptional presentation skills, to internal and external audiences
- Manages functional and organizational change; facilitates performance within a dynamic environment
- Drives employee engagement through advanced leadership skills and effective people management and performance dialogues
- Ensures timely, accurate and thorough Medical support is provided to customers, business partners and other internal and external stakeholders
- Balances multiple concurrent priorities, projects, deliverables, and deadlines, to ensure timely and efficient functional contributions
- Possesses deep and thorough medical and scientific knowledge, with a grasp for fundamental concepts within Ferring’s therapeutic areas
