Job Description

Job Purpose


Our client is seeking an on-site Executive Director who will serve as a strategic leader responsible for overseeing the administration, operations, and overall management of the organization. This role requires a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, governance, and community development, as well as exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills. The Executive Director will work closely with leaders, community members, and various stakeholders.


Duties


1. Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a clear vision and strategic plan for the organization that aligns with the cultural values and goals.
  • Responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and ongoing management of effective and efficient administrative policies and procedures.

2. Operations Management:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, including administrative functions, financial management, and program development.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and policies.

3. Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Foster positive relationships with leaders, community members, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the organization's interests in external partnerships and collaborations.

4. Community Development:

  • Lead initiatives that promote economic, social, and cultural development within the communities.
  • Identify opportunities for growth and improvement in areas such as education, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure.

5. Resource Management:

  • Manage the allocation of resources, including finances, personnel, and assets, to support the organizations initiatives and programs effectively.

6. Advocacy and Outreach:

  • Advocate for the rights and needs of the organization on local, regional, and national levels.
  • Raise awareness of issues affecting the community and work to create positive change.

7. Personnel Leadership:

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to staff members.
  • Conducts performance management reviews for senior management positions; collaboratively develops and implements succession planning for all senior positions.
  • Build and lead a skilled and motivated team.

8. Financial Oversight:

  • Supported by the Finance Department, serves as principal financial advisor to the Co-Chairs.
  • Responsible for the overall budget and financial management of the organization by ensuring the Board has the financial information they require to make informed decisions.
  • Maintains knowledge of current funding sources, assists with negotiation of funding agreements, and ensures contract accountability across all departments.

9. Cultural Preservation:

  • Collaborate with cultural leaders and elders to ensure the preservation and promotion of Indigenous traditions, languages, and customs.

10. Reporting and Communication:

  • Regularly report to the Co-Chairs on organizational performance, challenges, and opportunities.
  • In collaboration with the Co-Chairs, sets the agenda for board meetings and committee meetings; ensures the Board has information necessary to make informed decisions; makes recommendations on matters before Board; ensures decisions are recorded and communicated appropriately.
  • Communicate effectively with the leaders, community members, and external stakeholders.


Qualifications:


  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, a relevant professional designation, and extensive experience in an executive management, senior administrator role.
  • Proficiency in project management and program development.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to Indigenous affairs.
  • Proven ability to gather, analyze, and summarize complex information.
  • Ability and willingness to work in both Winnipeg and on-site as required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advocating for Indigenous rights and social justice.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions, and of the systemic issues faced by First Nations people, strong understanding of First Nations governance structures, cultural heritage, and traditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and foster a sense of community among diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • An effective decision-maker with proven results.
