Reporting to the Team Lead, the Mechanical Engineer is a dynamic engineer who is comfortable within a multi-discipline team environment. They are the member of the project team that contributes mechanical engineering knowledge and analysis to the project during the design phase of our work. The project mix is varied but the core focus is for Building Engineering Systems within Healthcare, Laboratory, and Data Centre markets. The role involves working on multiple projects in various locations. Some opportunities for progression in this position include roles for Project Management, Mechanical Engineer in a specialized role, Business Development, and Operations.


Primary Responsibilities


In the role of Mechanical Designer – Building Systems, we'll count on you to:


  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other mechanical engineers, technicians, drafters as needed
  • Know and comply with all relevant legislation, codes and corporate policies/procedures
  • Coordinate workload to complete engineering tasks on schedule
  • Communicate regularly with all stakeholders to help achieve success for each project
  • Work independently on small and medium projects and assist more senior engineers on larger projects.
  • Supervise and coach design team staff and junior engineers – and be accountable for the work produced. Assign routine engineering tasks and provide instruction in application of standard techniques and procedures.
  • Manage several work assignments/projects concurrently
  • Travel to and attend various external site locations and offices to participate in inspections, meetings, etc.
  • Write and edit mechanical specifications and reports
  • Provide construction contract administration/support as needed including performance of field inspections and commissioning. Review submittals for compliance with the contract documents.
  • Coordinate the work of the mechanical design team through the schematic, design development, contract document, and construction contract support phases of a project
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, review of submittals, RFIs, change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents
  • Coordinate mechanical documents with all affected disciplines
  • Prepare design drawings and perform relevant analyses, calculations, and modelling
  • Perform other duties as needed
  • Perform mechanical building condition assessments, working within team to deliver comprehensive facility condition reports.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal English communication and grammar skills with specific proficiency in effectively communicating complex engineering issues
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
  • 7+ years experience in analysis and design of mechanical systems for buildings
  • Detailed knowledge of analyses and calculations used for HVAC, fire protection and plumbing and drainage; as well as working knowledge of relevant engineering software such as HAP
  • Mechanical engineering design experience for buildings/facilities including: HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, BAS/controls, standby power systems, industrial equipment and installations, commissioning of mechanical systems
  • Detailed knowledge of OBC and NBC codes, as well as relevant standards such as NFPA, ASHRAE, CSA
  • Experience in on-site construction inspection of building mechanical systems
  • Experience includes client interface roles in consulting for health care, data centres or laboratories
  • Ontario licensed P. Eng. in good standing
  • Familiarity with PDF reviewer such as Bluebeam


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED desired. Experience with energy modelling software would be an asset.
  • Experience in Revit would be an asset
  • Experience in medical gas systems would be an asset
  • Experience in project management would be an asset
