Job Description

COMPANY SUMMARY:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Switchgear Designer is responsible for designing the electrical and structural requirements of products to meet customer and code requirements in a timely manner. The Mechanical Switchgear Designer is authorized to make decisions relating to the design and will have them approved by the Electrical Engineering Manager. The Mechanical Switchgear Designer possesses technical proficiency in the specification and design of electrical switchgear; prepares detailed design calculations and drawings with little supervision.

POSITION DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare detailed design drawings including:

General arrangement drawings for electrical Distributions

Detail parts and assemblies using SolidWorks

Create traveler packages and shop drawings

Prepare detailed bill of materials for projects

Create programs for production machines

  • Performs all duties so as to meet the responsibilities listed in REV’s Safety and Human Resources Policy Manual
  • Occasional site visits will be required to acquire information for design and installation of new equipment and retrofits
  • Performs duties according to REV’s quality system procedures and work instructions
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by management to ensure REV’s goals and objectives are met
  • Estimate materials used and complete material charge sheets
  • Collaborate directly with project managers, clients, electrical utilities and regulatory agencies (Electrical Safety Authority, municipalities, etc.)to ensure that designs comply with all customer and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure all project documents are organized and kept as required within REV’s document management system
  • Responsible for guiding shop personnel with assembly of completed designs
  • Responsible for preparing calculations for bus and enclosure design (bracing and conductor sizing) to ensure compliance with CSA C22.2-31 switchgear requirements


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to communicate and interact with others in a positive and constructive manner while simultaneously building credibility and rapport in relationships
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent education/training from an accredited Canadian institution is required
  • Abilityto work effectively under pressure, with changing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience in the Electrical design of LV/MV switchgear is considered an asset
  • Well organized with a strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is considered an asset
  • Reliable collaborator with a professional and positive approach
  • Previous steel design experience required
  • Strong computer proficiency and knowledge with Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • In depth knowledge of construction methods and installation details related to the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1)
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant mechanical switchgear design experience as per relevant switchgear standards (CSA C22.2 No. 31/UL 891/ IEEE C37.20.2).
  • In depth knowledge of construction methods and installation details related to electrical equipment and with codes and standards: CSA, IEEE
  • Experience with design of Industrial Control Panels (CSA C22.2 No. 14) is considered an asset
  • Good knowledge of SolidWorks (minimum 5 year)
