Job Description
Our team is looking for a mechanical designer with full product lifecycle design and manufacturing experience. You will help drive the design and support manufacturing of complex electro-mechanical components for Blackline Safety’s products.


The primary role will require design ownership of electro-mechanical sub-assemblies from conceptual architecture through detailed mechanical design, prototype verification, qualification testing, and finally, support the transition to full-scale production.


The candidate is also expected to provide technical support to the engineering team by participating in cross-functional reviews as well as generating and/or reviewing bills of materials, build documentation, assembly drawings, test fixtures, test procedures, and driving issues to closure.


Key Responsibilities


  • Design device components for efficient manufacturing using various techniques such as injection molding, sheet metal, casting, machining, and die-cutting.
  • Working with the aid of the engineering team you will be responsible for the detailed design, prototyping, testing, and mass-production support of one or more product sub-assemblies
  • May require travel within Canada & some overseas (up to 25% during builds)
  • Provide time estimates for the completion of assignments to meet project deadlines.
  • Think like a systems designer and strive to add value to all aspects of your project.


Requirements


  • 5+ years experience in full product lifecycle realization (concept to market), including designing and building products using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing methods & Design for Manufacturing DFM (injection molding, precision sheet metal & casting, 3D-Printing, die-cutting, and CNC machining)
  • Proficient with basic drafting and GD&T as well as manufacturing quality control practices
  • Demonstrated ability to take technical ownership of all mechanical aspects of electro-mechanical parts, components, and assemblies from design to mass-production
  • Proficient with modern CAD packages and workflows (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Familiarity with circuit board manufacturing, electro-mechanical component selection (switches, connectors, etc.) and industrial electronics integration best practices
  • Self-starter and can work independently or collaboratively with a team.
  • Fundamental knowledge of materials (plastics/metals/glass/elastomers) and processing techniques
  • Ability to create and maintain high-quality design files including detailed 3D CAD & assy. models, BOMs, manufacturing drawings, product specifications, and technical presentations


Bonus point for:


  • Experience with ruggedized and/or ingress protected product design and associated testing methods (drop, shock, vibration, ingress, and HALT testing)
  • Experience with simulation tools & FEA (fluid, thermal or mechanical)
  • Experience with top-down 3D modeling and hands-on model-making & part prototyping
  • Experience with cosmetic surfacing for Industrial Design
