Program Overview – Cedarvale Housing, Community Care


The Food Access Coordinator, reporting to the Manager(s) of Supportive Housing, will play a crucial role in ensuring residents have access to and knowledge about healthy food choices. Working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team; they will coordinate services with the kitchen team, PSWs, case managers, and client support workers.


The primary responsibilities of the Food Access Coordinator include coordinating the promotion and implementation of participant involvement in various food programs. These programs may include a food bank, cooking workshops, gardening initiatives, and similar activities aimed at enhancing food access. Additionally, the coordinator will be responsible for upholding health and safety standards and fostering a welcoming environment.


What You Will Do


  • Support front-line staff in the supervision of volunteers and placement students.
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming environment through excellent customer service and conflict management.
  • Maintain and cultivate strong relationships with food banks and other supportive agencies. This includes networking and conducting outreach to a diverse range of food providers.
  • Coordinate and operate food banks and similar programs to ensure access to nutritious food for seniors.
  • In conjunction with the Director and other Drop-in Coordinators, monitor and ensure the continued development of program policy and procedures.
  • Track daily meals served and other relevant statistics for funders and program development with the assistance of Food Access Assistant and Drop-In staff.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and ensure the proper ordering, receiving handling, and storage of both purchased and donated food items.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching to tenants on nutrition, meal planning, and grocery shopping.
  • Ensure the purchase and maintenance of program equipment and supplies.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with other internal and external services and programs.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain systems including all records and schedules as required.
  • Conduct assessments to determine individual nutritional needs and develop an individualized plan.
  • Implement food services program within budgetary constraints.
  • Develop and maintain gardening and similar programs.
  • Provide direction and coordination of team development needs and opportunities/initiatives.


What You Bring to the Team
  • Bachelor’s in Nutrition, Public Health, a related field or work.
  • 2+ years’ experience working with individuals’ mental health, addiction, street-involvement, and community-based nutrition programs, preferably seniors.
  • Effective September 7, 2021, all newly hired employees will be required to provide proof that they have completed an approved course of vaccination against COVID-19 at least 14 days prior to commencing employment or provide documentation to support an exemption based on grounds covered by the Ontario Human Rights Act (i.e. Medical exemption).
