Job Description

MATRIX is looking for an experienced First Cook with an OFA3 certificate (equivalent to Advanced First Aid in Alberta and Ontario). You are team oriented, motivated, and have an acute eye for detail, accuracy, and excellent skill with prioritizing tasks. You will play a key role at one of our remote exploration camps by performing or coordinating all catering both independently and within a team setting.


There are several positions available at various camps in the Yukon, Northwest Territory, and Nunavut. In this position you will report to the Camp Manager. Start date for these positions is as soon as possible.


Responsibilities:


  • Report any unsafe conditions and/or equipment to Camp Manager.
  • Maintain a well-organized and clean food storage area.
  • Ensure good housekeeping in the work area at all times.
  • Participate in daily toolbox meetings.
  • Maintain sufficient food inventory for site resident numbers.
  • Prepare service for three (3) daily meals; Buffet Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
  • Report all incidents and accidents immediately.
  • Provide facility orientation to incoming kitchen staff.
  • Conduct monthly worksite and kitchen facility inspections to ensure health and safety of workspace.
  • Provide coaching and training to kitchen staff.
  • Develop menus that reflect site preferences and dietary restrictions.
  • Ensure the “first in first out” rotation procedures to support food inventory control.
  • Maintain a high performing, team orientated and productive work environment.
  • Implement and execute a Food Safety Plan using advanced HACCP recording methods.
  • Liaise with grocers for quality, quantity and back orders.
  • Execute safe food storage and labeling of potential food allergy items.
  • Ensure kitchen staff performs tasks according to safe work practices and safe job procedures.
  • Order, received, and properly store grocery orders.
  • Prepare baked goods and desserts from scratch.


Required Knowledge & Experience


  • Able to lift and move heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform physical labor.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Highly motivated, team-oriented individual with attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to maintain a high level of performance over a 10 – 12 hour shift.
  • Excellent First Aid/Emergency Responder knowledge and experience.
  • Physical ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Minimum of three (3) years working in a remote camp as a First Cook.
  • Ability to work a rotation schedule.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Management, organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • OFA3 or EMR - This is required to be considered for the position, and Must be a current certification. Advanced First Aid (10 day course) is also acceptable.


Preferred Licensing & Certifications:


  • Food Safe Handling Certificate and WHMIS Certificate.
  • Culinary Diploma and/or Red Seal Designation preferred
  • Previous experience working in a remote camp setting.

This position works on a 4 week in / 2 week out rotation (Fully Remote). Preference will be given to local residents and areas in proximity to the local communities of these camps.
