Metallurgical Engineer

Perform routine to moderately complex inspections and set quality standards for both in-process and finished products and materials. Develop methods for testing, sampling, and training. Evaluate production and recommend improvements. Work with quality inspection supervisors to train and oversee inspectors in their use of control forms, procedures, and correcting quality problems.

Performance Expectations

1.1 Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements in the facility’s geographic location and:

• The Global Operating System Plays;
• ISO 14001: Environmental Management system standard;
• IATF 16949 Technical Specification Management and Linamar Quality Basics system standards.
• OHSAS 18001: Health and Safety management system standard;
• CQI and Customer Specific Requirements

1.2 Support, Foster, Promote and Demonstrate Linamar’s Core Values and Leadership Behaviors.

1.3 Maintain balance between customer, employee and financial satisfaction by maximizing facility/department Performance Indicators to align to Linamar’s Stepping Stool of Success Strategy.

1.4 Support and maintain department lean initiatives as set out in LPS system requirements.

• Maintain department 5S requirements.

1.5 Metallurgical sample preparation and measurement of micro and macro hardness characteristics.

1.6 Evaluation of material microstructures before and after heat treatment.

1.7 Keeping records of measurements in order.

1.8 MPI –samples and perform contamination test.

1.9 Use of cutting saw to prepare samples for metallurgical evaluation.

1.10 Keeping equipment and laboratory in working order.

1.11 Some other duties in the laboratory and on the shop floor can be assigned.

1.12 Provide a means of communications directly with the customer in order to develop and supply a component which meets or exceeds the customer requirements.

1.13 Maintain effective communication with internal and external customers to ensure all quality requirements are met

1.14 Assist with submissions to the customer as per their specific customer requirements

1.15 Be actively involved in quality planning (Control Plans, APQP, FMEA, PPAP, Gauging) and responsible for maintaining and updating Control Plans/Job Cards

1.16 Participate in Core Team meetings and MRB dispositions.

1.17 Assist Quality Manager in establishing, implementing, and maintaining the quality management system.

1.18 Responsible for continual improvement activities to enhance the quality system, such as capability and MSA studies, 5S, lean methods, etc.

1.19 Interface with Engineering and Operations to ensure transfer to Production of new products are in accordance with approved data/process.

1.20 Support the Quality Inspectors and Operators to ensure that products and processes comply with the relevant requirements of the quality management system.

1.21 Conduct audits, including closing out audit findings, creating audits finding reports and determine proper corrective and preventive actions.

1.22 Initiate and participate in 8D Problem solving meetings with customers, suppliers or internal. Analyze failure, corrective and preventive actions to respond to internal and external customer complaints. Provide updates directly to the external and internal customers and suppliers as per their specific requirements. Monitor and ensure timely closures of corrective and preventive actions.

1.23 Identify gauging methods, obtain quotes, purchase, complete MSA studies and implement and maintain related systems on production lines.

1.24 Create and maintain company quality documentation, such as quality procedures, inspection and gauging work instructions including inspection videos.

1.25 Responsible for planning, organizing and managing the overall activities of receiving / outgoing quality functions including sorting and controlled shipments [CS1/2 or Safe Launch].

1.26 Continuously working with supplier to improve supplied product quality.

1.27 Manage supplier’s performance and conduct supplier audits.

Credentials

• A university degree or college diploma in metallurgy, material science (ferrous/nonferrous materials) or equivalent experience.
• Magnetic Particle Inspection Level 2.

Desired Characteristics

Essential Skills

• Experience working with metallurgical laboratory equipment.
• Document Use: 4
• Minimum of 2 years experience in heat treat operations or a combination of a minimum of 5 years of formal metallurgical education and heat treat experience.
• Ability to interpret microstructures of ferrous and nonferrous materials.
• Reading: 4
• Be able to work with machine shop metal working tools to extract samples for further preparation.
• Numeracy: 5
