Working for the Department/Faculty


The Electrical Utilities group is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the 15kV network in the Greater Campus Area (GCA), South Campus, Devon, Kinsella, Camrose and other University properties within the Province of Alberta. The Greater Campus Area includes U of A Hospital, Cross Cancer Institute, Canadian Blood Services, and the Jubilee Auditorium. In addition, Electrical Utilities provide electrical services to other utility departments to operate and maintain the Heating Plant, Cooling Plant(s), associated equipment and their distribution networks (corridor).


Position


Reporting to the Electrical Utilities Supervisor and working under the day-to-day direction of the Electrical Utilities Foreman, the Electrical Utilities Electrician is responsible for operating and servicing a complex high voltage distribution system (13800V and 4160V) as well as auxiliary systems in accordance with applicable codes and utility regulations and in combination with First Class Journeyman Electrician requirements.


Duties


  • Operates and maintains a large complex high voltage distribution system including high voltage distribution equipment, transformers, cables, low voltage distribution equipment, and high / medium voltage generators . ;
  • Splices and terminates high voltage cables used in the high voltage electrical distribution system;
  • Attends safety meetings once a month where electricians contribute ideas to formulate changes regarding procedures and safe practices critical to the operation; and
  • Tests efficiencies and integrity of switches, transformers, motors, generators, protective relays and other related apparatus;
  • Tests / cleans / repairs cables, H.V. distribution transformers, H.V. switchgear, transfer systems, motors, generators, protective relays, computer control systems, lighting systems, communication systems, programmable logic controllers, boiler and generator controls, and motor control centers;
  • While on 24hr emergency standby, addresses any power distribution problems and makes contact with Fortis Alberta Inc. or EPCOR when power interruptions occur in the Greater Campus area or off campus properties . ;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs electrical services, pumps, controls, data collecting computing systems, lighting, electrically operated valves, alarm systems, etc., throughout all U of A campuses and off-site locations;
  • Issues safety clearance certificates describing protective measures and procedures during work processes;
  • Installs new substations that encompasses all electrical distribution and transformation equipment for electrical service to customers;


Minimum Qualifications


  • Alberta First Class Journeyman Certificate in the electrical trade.
  • Grade 12; and

  • Power Systems Electrician’s Certificate an asset
  • Programmable Logic Controller Training
  • Certificate in Scaffold Building and Inspections
  • Training in HV electrical Cable Splicing and terminations
  • Electrical Code upgrading
