As one of our Operator 1 – Utilities you will learn what is under the roads we drive on every day and how that infrastructure keeps our community safe by providing safe, high-quality water and managing sanitary and storm water flow. Olds has a population of just under 10,000 people so you will be exposed to all aspects of our utilities operation from water distribution to wastewater collection. To thrive in this position, you must be eager to learn and work, have a Grade 12 or High School Equivalency Diploma, a class 5 Alberta Driver’s license and not be comfortable working in mud. This is an entry level position but previous experience in utilities or Alberta Environment and Protected Areas certification would be an asset helpful.
Every day is different for the utilities crew. They are responsible for maintaining over two hundred kilometers of infrastructure that is rarely noticed until something goes wrong. Duties will include water and wastewater pump house monitoring and maintenance, flushing sanitary and storm sewers, emergency repairs on broken underground infrastructure, installation of water meters and equipment operation, especially skid steer or front-end loader.
Our utilities crew is guided by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas legislation and regulations. Through this legislation the Town operates a Level 2 Water Distribution and Level 2 Wastewater Collection system. The treatment of water and wastewater is handled through regional commissions. Treated drinking water comes from Anthony Henday Water Treatment Plant through the Mountain View Regional Water Services Commission. Our wastewater is collected and pumped to the City of Red Deer Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant through the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission.
The wage range for this position is $27.81 - $31.53 per hour. The annual salary is based on a 40-hour work week. This position includes health benefits and participates in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP). The hours of work are generally 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday with rotational standby shifts required.
