In addition to building customized solutions for business, we offer full service commercial banking solutions, including a wide selection of daily banking products, complementary lending services, cash management solutions, as well as insurance and investments.
About this role:
Reporting to the VP Distribution, Business Banking, the Director, Small Business will be accountable to lead and direct the implementation and on-going management of business banking needs of small business Members at Meridian. Responsibilities will also include Professional Banking which crosses over small business and commercial segments – expect to have min 1 or 2 Commercial Relationship Managers on the team focused on professional banking. The primary responsibility will be to develop a proactive go to market strategy to retain, attract, and expand the business banking share of wallet, grow revenue and increase profitability. Working closely with key business partners, the incumbent will develop the overall strategy and tactical plans and structure for Small Business and Professional Banking. The individual would also recruit, train, develop and lead a team of small business leaders and advisors that will execute on the Meridian for Good corporate strategy and small business plans.
What you’ll do:
Sales Leadership
  • Lead and coach Small Business leaders and advisors in using effective Sales and Service techniques to proactively target small business prospects and assist existing Members.
  • Enhance Meridian’s presence and profile by representing Meridian within the small business community with the objective of increasing market share.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to peers in Business Banking Centres to achieve organizational strategy.
  • Develop sales leadership practices contributing to an engaged and cohesive team that is aligned to Meridian’s values and practices.
  • Guide and assist leadership in prioritizing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives within MCU’s small business segment.
Innovation/Strategy
  • Sector/industry trends and insights
  • Individual sales coaching opportunities
  • Develop and implement a product offering for small business Members and prospects.
  • Provides the information necessary to focus Business Banking’s efforts and performance, which will include:
  • Business unit portfolio performance & opportunities
  • Contribute to the development of Sales & Support programs to enable the frontline including the development and maintenance of Business Banking Curriculum.
  • Fosters a culture of engagement and contribute to building a talent development pipeline for succession.
  • Create a structure, strategy and tactical plan that will meet the business banking financial needs of small business Members and prospects.
  • Focus on creating a more proactive to go market strategy to target and grow within our targets sectors and markets.
Cultivating Internal Partnerships
  • Build strong and trusting relationships with the Executive and Senior Leadership Team.
  • Build and foster relationships with key internal partners such Small Business Credit, Retail and Wealth to achieve strategic objectives and drive referral opportunities for other MCU business lines.
  • Be an ambassador for Small Business within Business Banking and the organization and work on initiatives geared toward furthering the partnership with key stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Commercial team on sales initiatives, market and COI development/execution and general to go market strategy.
What you can bring to Meridian:
  • Proven ability to collaborate and partner with internal key lines of business including retail, wealth management and insurance.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Expert understanding of banking including a proven track record of developing and integrating sales plans that achieve desired growth, and Member engagement success
  • Strong business orientation, strategic and disciplined thinking.
  • Bachelor’s degree or MBA in commerce and business administration or related experience required.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience with a proven track record in the Business Banking field of which 3-5 or more years have been in a people management role.
  • Deep knowledge of business banking risk management, lending process and sales practices coupled
  • Proven leadership experience resulting increased employee engagement and alignment
  • Strong familiarity/knowledge of Business Banking products & services and their applicability to business banking
  • Understanding of all operational processes and supporting application and polices
