Director Of Staff Life

The Director of Staff is responsible for staff recruiting, hiring, communication, and support leading up to, during, and following each summer. The Director of Staff works out of the midtown Toronto office from September to May and lives and works at site in Algonquin Park from June to August. Our Toronto office team of 5 Directors is small but passionate, collaborative, and creative. We work very hard during the summer months, enjoy plenty of time off in the off season, and have the best cottage in the world (camp!) to enjoy when the kids go home!

June to August (at camp)

• Emotional support person and liaison for staff issues throughout summer
• Facilitate staff recreational and well-being activities throughout summer
• Lead staff training session on topics related to staff life and well-being

September to May (in Toronto)

• Support Administrative Director to collect required documents from staff hired
• Recruit and support new staff hiring, including creating job postings, attending job fairs, building partnerships with schools, candidate screening and reference checks
• Travel for staff recruiting and work flexible hours in months leading up to camp
• Support international staff with organizing travel to camp
• Re-hire successful returning staff for next year after each summer, including managing ongoing communication about position changes/promotions (in collaboration with Camp Directors)
• Create and implement staff contact and engagement strategy throughout the year (newsletters, events, social media, individual meetings, etc.)
• Revamp and implement alumni engagement strategy

Requirements

Experience

• Experience in summer camp or outdoor recreation industry
• Experience or education in recruiting, supervising, and supporting staff well- being

Skills

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Proficiency in digital design and social media
• Flexibility and creativity
• Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in crisis situations
• Passion for outdoor education and youth development
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Camp Arowhon’s culture, values, policies and procedures is considered an asset
• Relevant certifications (lifeguarding, wilderness first aid, white water rescue, and challenge course safety) are considered an asset
• Must have valid driver’s license and ability to obtain F class license
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
