Data Analytics Specialist


Reporting to the General Manager, Energy & Power Innovation Centre (EPIC), the Data Analytics Specialist will serve as a resource to projects in the areas of software development, energy & power and/or data systems integration. This position will be responsible for the providing technical expertise during all the different project stages, from scope definition to delivery.


The projects will involve industry partners, mostly small and medium-size Enterprises (SMEs), looking for integrated solutions hardware, software, value-added data processing that can help create and/or upgrade their potential and existing products and services. The incumbent will help scope and deliver projects where it is not only required to analyze data but to understand why and how we are collecting information; as well as creating cost-effective methods to implementing business-minded solutions.


The successful candidate will have background and/or experience to conduct activities related data analysis, software development, and cloud architecture; as well as subject matter expertise in one or more of the technical areas of EPIC. The incumbent will also be required to budget effectively and manage project technical-related budgets.


Responsibilities


Duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Technical lead for diverse industry projects for EPIC; hand-on software development.
  • Scope projects and identify required resources (time and people) as part of industry quotes and/or proposals. Manage resources and lead data analytics/modeling/back-end activities and projects.
  • Interact with industry partners as key technical contact.
  • Coordinate and deliver support across other IDEAWORKS Centres with data analytics requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Oversee junior staff and students.


Qualifications


The successful applicant must have:


  • A University degree related to computer engineering, software development, electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
  • Generating dashboards/reports, including relevant metrics, providing feedback, and making recommendations based on the data, where appropriate.
  • Techniques to minimize data collection and/or data processing costs.
  • Collecting, normalizing, validating and structuring incoming data (medium to large datasets).
  • Creating custom-design visuals to highlight data trends.
  • Experience with JavaScript ES6.
  • Identifying appropriate calculations and visual types to be applied to data signals to obtain relevant results focused on product/device performance.
  • Migrating/translating databases from different platforms.
  • Data analysis to draw business-relevant conclusions.
  • Advanced Python programming experience.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Using at least one of the following environments: Visual Studio Code, Jupiter Notebook/ Jupiter Lab, Spider.
  • Demonstrated collaborative approach to solving problems.
  • Advanced knowledge of database design and operation (SQL and NoSQL).
  • Version control tools (e.g. Github, Code Commit, etc.).
  • Auditing data regularly to ensure data integrity and quality and to identifies potential anomalies.
