Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.


Position Overview


Reporting to the Shared Health Manager of Patient Care for the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, the incumbent participates in clinical research projects involving the administration of investigational therapies and treatments to a defined group of patients presenting in the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department. The incumbent will work with a variety of Principle Investigators responsible for the various clinical research project. The incumbent at all times must conduct all of their work in accordance with Shared Health policies and procedures for research as set out by Shared Health Research and Innovation. The primary responsibility is to identify eligible candidates for the research study and monitor the ongoing clinical status of patients while they are receiving investigational therapies.


The clinical research nurse works with the Principal Investigator(s) to ensure patient safety in the conduct of clinical research.


The clinical research nurse must provide professional nursing care and participate in the administration of an assigned research study functioning within the standards of nursing practice in Manitoba.


Experience


  • Previous experience in research of a clinical nature preferred.


Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)


  • Successful completion of a relevant post-basic program may be required.
  • Graduate from an approved School of Nursing.


Certification/Licensure/Registration


  • Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) required.
  • Valid motor vehicle license and insurance and access to a vehicle would be an asset.
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Current B.L.S. registration at the Targeted Responder level required.


Qualifications And Skills
  • Principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Demonstrated critical thinking/problem-solving skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Ability to prioritize care for an individual patient or group of patients.
  • Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations.
  • Knowledge of:
  • Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses.
  • Proficient with computers, software programs, and applications such as Windows and Word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to maintain concentration with frequent interruptions.
  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
  • Ability to recognize and pursue self-development opportunities.
  • Ability to function in a demanding and stressful environment.
  • College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses.
  • Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area.
  • Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team.
  • Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS-2): Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans
  • Ability to perform independently and as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Principles of delegation.


The successful applicant must demonstrate medication calculation competency during orientation as per Children’s Hospital Policy No. 100.30.109.


Physical Requirements


  • Moderate physical effort required.
  • Incumbents may be required to work the occasional evening or night shift in order to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position depending upon research protocols.
