Job Summary
The Health and Safety Coordinator develops, administers, and implements company wide occupational safety programs, and serves as the coordinator for the occupational safety programs for C&A Group of Companies. The Health and Safety Coordinator plans, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates departmental occupational safety programs, ensuring compliance needs are continuously met at all levels.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
A Safety Coordinator is required to perform some or all the following duties:
  • Maintain awareness of amendments to the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations and make recommendations for their implementation.
  • Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments.
  • Direct and review the analysis of incident and injury data, identifying the needs for new or modified occupational safety programs.
  • Manage and/or perform job site safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports, and recommendations.
  • Devote time on the shop floor observing behaviours, tasks, processes, etc.
  • Provide training to managers and others on occupational safety issues.
  • Provide advice and counsel to management and other employee groups on a broad range of occupational safety issues and decisions.
  • Research occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the workplace.
  • Provide guidance to field personnel via safety briefings.
  • Develop and implement safety programs by inspecting or reviewing areas, equipment, processes, and work activities for hazardous conditions in the shop and/or field.
  • Provide direction and/or guidance to less experienced occupational safety personnel.
  • Ensure the timely completion of incident/injury reporting both internally & externally.
  • Plan, design, develop, implement, and evaluate occupational safety programs.
  • Develop and conduct occupational safety training for various work groups, including evaluation and modification of programs to meet local, provincial, and federal OHSA requirements.
  • Research, plan, organize and/or conduct training programs/seminars for C&A Group Inc. foremen, leads and field employees, regarding WHMIS, Fall Protection, Orientation, Personal Protection Equipment, CPR/First Aid, industry specific related issues, etc.
  • Complete or assist with maintenance and certification audits of the HSEMS.
  • Design safety standards to conform to industry standards and federal, provincial, and local regulations.
  • Advise on improvements in tracking and reporting procedures.
  • Responsible for facilitating JWHSC meetings, safety orientation, safety training, job site inspections and reporting.
  • Responsible for monitoring adherence to the company safety program by all C&A Group Inc. employees and subcontractors.
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to coach and mentor all staff on applicable aspects of the HSEMS and OH&S legislation.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license and clean drivers abstract.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.
  • Physical ability to lift 25 lbs and to climb stairs frequently.
  • Two to five years’ experience in occupational health and safety in an industrial establishment.
  • Ability to monitor HSEMS needs, plan and schedule tasks.
  • Excellent punctuality and attendance.
  • Proficiency with database applications and administration systems, specifically Microsoft Office.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations and workers’ compensation legislation.
  • Safety certification training (i.e., CRSP, CRST, NCSO, OHS Diploma,WHMIS, LOTO, etc.) is considered a strong asset.
  • Manual dexterity to use desktop computers and peripherals.
  • Ability to develop, implement, revise, and communicate policies, programs, training programs and procedures, in compliance with applicable legislation.
  • Work alone and as a team with all divisions to implement and enforce safety.
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Strong English communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives are prerequisites.
  • Possess or willingness to possess COR Auditor certification with the Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships.
