Working for the Department/Faculty


Engineering & Operations is comprised of building service workers, engineers, technologists, peace officers and tradespeople help keep all five of our campuses maintained and operating safely and efficiently. This group supports our community through operating, maintaining and renewing our infrastructure and providing a number of safety and security services.


Position Summary


The University of Alberta is accredited by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs (supported by the Safety Codes Council) with being responsible for the administration and delivery of Safety Codes Services in compliance with our Quality Management Plan (QMP) pursuant to the Safety Codes Act. To maintain the status of being an accredited Corporation, the U of A must adhere to certain procedures and guidelines set up by the Safety Codes Council. It is the responsibility of the Safety Codes Coordinator to ensure that these procedures and guidelines are being adhered to by all parties involved. This position is also responsible for the maintenance (updating and uploading) of technical records within the UIRAP (Meridian) Document Management System.


Duties


Safety Codes Coordinator


  • Create and maintain Safety Code files which will track all phases of design development, detailed design, construction and commissioning of a University project. Input construction project description, building classification into the Safety Code file.
  • Receive from the retained accredited agency documented results of design reviews and safety code compliance inspections.
  • Work with the internal teams (Trades and PMO) to ensure continuity of new projects with compliance to code requirements;
  • Examine incoming documentation for compliance with the QMP. Identify all non-compliant requirements which must be tracked for compliance resolution.
  • Coordinate the request for the retained accredited agency to review designs and subsequently perform safety code compliance site inspections or audits.
  • Within the defined scope of the University of Alberta’s approved Quality Management Plan (QMP) for Buildings, Electrical, Fire, Plumbing, Gas and Elevator:


University Infrastructure Records Access Program (UIRAP)


  • Each electronic record is opened and examined ensuring quality control and compliance with the University of Alberta Design and Construction Standards & Guidelines and Design and Graphic Standards.
  • Responsible for the maintenance (updating and uploading) of technical records within the UIRAP system.


Minimum Qualifications


Education and Experience:


  • A completed 2 year technology diploma in a related field (i.e. Construction Engineering Technology) plus at least 5 years of relevant experience in the building construction industry post-diploma.
  • Advanced experience working with the code requirements of the National Building Code (Alberta Edition) or alternatively the National Building Code or provincial equivalent if working experience was gained in another provincial jurisdiction.
  • Experience working in an environment of records management, records filing and retrieval.


Special Skills/Training


  • Records management training utilizing electronic records management application software.
  • Utilize and interpret the National Building Code (Alberta Edition) to ensure that all aspects of design follow the requirements of the code as it relates to the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of database management and record keeping in order to quickly and accurately record and retrieve information.
  • Ability to evaluate, audit, deduce and/or assess data using established criteria.
  • Working knowledge of Office applications (Microsoft and/or Google).
  • Proficient use of AutoCAD (computer aided design and drafting).


Preferred Qualifications


Safety Codes Officer Building Certification (Alberta) would be considered an asset
