The Opportunity: Barminco Mining Services Canada Ltd. has an exciting opportunity for a HSE (Health Safety & Environmental) Coordinator at the Red Chris Mine in northern British Columbia. Working a FIFO rotation of 14-shifts on and 14-shifts off.
Reporting to the Project Manager, and functionally to the HSE Manager of North America, the HSE Coordinator is responsible for administering, and implementing company-wide occupational health, safety and environmental programs, and serves as the coordinator for the day-to-day safety initiatives. These may include, but not limited to, job observations, safety audits, incident investigation, risk assessments, hazard identifications, and emergency response, ensuring that Barminco’s safety values and culture is effectively promoted and adopted across the operation in an effective and efficient manner.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Perform safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports and recommendations.
- Maintenance and facilitation of critical registers, including but not limited to; inspection schedules, hazard boards, calibrated equipment, lifting and slinging etc.
- Conduct regular and scheduled audits of HSE and systems, programs and site locations work environments.
- Direct communications between injured employees, their management and medical providers to ensure that all parties are aware of rights, responsibilities and recovery plans.
- Develop and distribute weekly/monthly HSE reports, presentations and HSE topic that provide employees with workplace injury statistics, new initiatives and system changes.
- Provide on-site inductions ensuring all employees and contractors are site compliant and competent to perform the required tasks/roles.
- Conduct and facilitate training of operational personnel, assessing for competence, identifying shortfalls in skillsets, ensuring training is realistic and practical, accurately recording and displaying competency data.
- Ensure full understanding and compliance with all Barminco HSE policies/procedures and work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other local regulatory agencies to promote safe work behaviour.
- Attend and provide input to the regular operations meetings such as weekly safety meetings, production meetings.
- Conduct regular and scheduled workplace inspections across various locations across various sites.
- Maintaining of records, reports and documents required to meet corporate, site and regulatory requirements.
- Provide HSE mentoring to operational personnel through crew presentations, communications and knowledge sharing of learnings from incidents.
- Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with employees and business partners.
- Review and realignment of company and site procedures/safe work practices as necessary.
- Responsible for the accuracy of information being entered into company and business partners database (INX and CHESS).
Skills and Experience:
- Leading, influencing and mentoring those around you through the Barminco principles.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, cross-cultural environment with high degree of professionalism, leadership, and self-motivation.
- Computer skills; Microsoft Word & Microsoft Excel and specialized site-specific databases.
- 4-6 years’ relevant experience, preferably in an underground hard rock mine.
- Maintain a valid Driver’s License; manual transmission experience an asset.
- Effective and respectful communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization, both verbal and written
- Certificate in OH&S preferred.
- Eagerness to learn and grow.
- Able to effectively prioritize workload/activities with strong sense of urgency and outcomes focused.
- Strong commitment to be a team player, build trust, be accountable and hold crews accountable.
- Thorough knowledge and application of HSE legislation and compliance requirements to Barminco and the client’s safety systems.
- Maintain and demonstrate high level of integrity and confidentiality.
- Ability to be organized while simultaneously managing multiple job assignments
- Ability to observe, analyze, resolve problems and make decisions in a logical and effective manner
Work Conditions
- Noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
- Extreme weather conditions.
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to communicate, sit, stand, walk. Occasionally required to climb, reach, push/pull, manipulate objects and work in awkward positions.
- Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to do shift camp work on a rotational basis (dayshift/nightshift), typically the rotations are 2 weeks on site (minimum 12-hour days), followed by 2 weeks off – working statutory holidays as they fall within the rotation.
- Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are required.
NOTE: Selected candidates will have to successfully complete a pre-employment Fit for Duty medical which includes alcohol and drug screening.
