The opportunity

Tata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking an Assistant Manager – Mining Operations to join their team to work on a Fly-in/Fly-out basis of 2 weeks On/Off with a standard 12 hours/day schedule, to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. Operations at our mine site are running 24/7 all year long.

Travel to site and meals and accommodations while on site are coordinated and provided by TSMC.The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake, Happy Valley-Goose Bay in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.

Reporting to the General Manager, Mining Operations and Site Services, the primary focus of the Assistant Manager’s role is to be responsible for the efficient operation of themine in the safest possible manner, and at the lowest cost consistent with quality requirements.This is a leadership position at our site with a focus in achieving the production targets through the management of the mine planning services and when the Mining Superintendent is off-site.

This is a permanent position on a 2 week on/off rotation to and from the Schefferville, QC/Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville Québec.

Key Responsibilities

• Schedule and direct all mining activities including stripping, drilling, blasting, haulage, reclamation.
• Delivering and managing the department budgets to ensure company objectives are achieved
• Coordinate with the geology department to ensure that the mine planning is accurately developed in new areas of the operation.
• Provide Safety Leadership in performing regular safety inspections, observing and reinforcing safe work behaviors and in participating in formal monthly safety meetings.
• Supervise short and long term mine planning and ensure all environmental regulations are met.
• Meet Plants’ ore supply requirements in the short and long term as well as all product quality specifications.
• Manage a small technical team and supervise staff in the mine planning, , drill and blast, survey, geotechnical and water management teams.

Required Qualifications

• Extensive experience in an open pit mining environment, of which a minimum of 5 years should have been in a leadership role
• A Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering combined with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
• Written and verbal communication skills in French would be an asset
• Supervisory experience managing interdisciplinary teams of over twenty individuals, preferably in high tonnage operations.
• Personally committed to the highest safety and environmental standards, and able to take full responsibility for safety at the operation with minimum supervision
