Position Identification

Title: Analyst, Salmon Watersheds Program (SWP)

Status and Funding: Full-time; Remote; Grant funded

Start Date: Est. June 15, 2023

Organizational Summary

The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF), founded in 1987, is a federally incorporated non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wild Pacific salmon and their natural habitats in British Columbia and the Yukon.Operating independently from government, PSF facilitates dialogue and undertakes positive initiatives in support of Pacific salmon amongst all levels of government including First Nations, as well as industry, communities, individual volunteers and all fishing interests.

Position Overview

The Analyst provides analytical support to a variety of projects undertaken by PSF’s Salmon Watersheds Program. In addition to working closely with other staff in the Salmon Watersheds Program, this position requires working with an extensive network of partner organizations across BC and the Yukon to synthesize, analyze, and visualize Pacific salmon data. Occasional (approximately two to four times per year) travel to communities within BC and the Yukon is required.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Analyst undertakes a predominantly technical role in the Salmon Watersheds Program:

  • Provide scientific advice to the Program Director and other program staff.
  • Develop and apply methods for undertaking quality control and quality assurance of data.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with Salmon Watersheds Program staff on research initiatives including contributing to literature reviews, developing new analytical approaches, and undertaking related analyses.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including methodologies and metadata.
  • Contribute to the development of program-led peer-review academic publications including developing publication ideas, undertaking related analyses, and writing of manuscripts.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data relevant to Pacific salmon.
  • Report on project work during workshops and meetings using easy to understand language and images.
  • Develop, apply, and interpret statistical models for analyzing salmon population data.
  • Develop online web tools for visualizing salmon-related data and analyses (e.g., via RShiny, RMarkdown).
  • Generate easy-to-understand data products including graphs, figures, posters, and other visually compelling displays for the purposes of internal and external communications, program planning, and grant reporting.
  • Communicate results in technical reports, briefing notes, and other publications.
  • Contribute to grant development efforts and proposal writing.
  • Compile and synthesize Pacific salmon datasets from a wide variety of data custodians and data sources.
  • Work with program partners (e.g., DFO, First Nations, academics) to solicit feedback on analyses and work collaboratively to adapt and improve methods and approaches.

Reporting and Supervision

Supervised by the Director of Salmon Watersheds Program, the Analyst will be responsible for undertaking all work identified by the Director and meeting or exceeding the standard of care set by the Director.

Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail, particularly with respect to technical documentation.
  • Experience performing advanced statistical analysis (e.g., Bayesian statistics, non-linear, hierarchical, mixed effects, and/or multivariate models) in R and developing mathematical and simulation models.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology, Biology, Applied Science, Resource Management, or other similarly related discipline with a focus in the fisheries and aquatic sciences domain.MSc or PhD an asset.
  • GIS skills and spatial modelling an asset, but not required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences (lay, technical, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to create novel data visualization and decision-support tools in RShiny.
  • A minimum of 3+ years progressive experience in an Analyst type role (a graduate degree in the above fields will be considered as experience).
  • Experience contributing to the drafting of reports and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a strong interest in contributing to open, transparent, and reproducible research in a collaborative team environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of the biology, ecology, and life history of Pacific salmon an asset.
  • Proficiency in using GitHub, RMarkdown and RShiny.
  • Experience undertaking analysis related to salmon conservation and management.
  • Advanced skills in using the R programming language to manipulate and visualize data, fit statistical models, and/or run simulation models.

Compensation

The compensation range for this role is between $80,000-$90,000 per year.

Location

This role is primarily remote. A hybrid option with in-office attendance may be accommodated at Management’s discretion. Travel will be required to participate in in-person meetings, workshops, and staff gatherings. Preference will be given to candidates from BC, Alberta and the Yukon.
