What will you be doing as a Activities Assistant?
In the role of Activities Assistant, your main focus is developing and coordinating programs in the Memory Care and Assisted Living Floors. The Activities Assistant will also support the programs of the independent residents as required. This role will play an integral role within the department through the creation and delivery of a wide-ranging variety of activities and social programs intended to engage and enhance the overall lives of those individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Responsibilities
- Develop & maintain a rapport with staff, residents/family members, external care providers and volunteers
- Maintain a clean and organized activities environment and supply room
- Inspire and encourage resident participation through social programming
- Work within a tight timeline to assist and create a monthly calendar of events and programs
- Assist with escorting residents to and from activities and other social programs
- Work closely with resident care staff to provide targeted programs that meet the social and engagement needs of those individuals residing on our Memory Care floor
- Develop, create and deliver personalized programs through one-on-one engagement and meaningful interactions
- As required, organize and coordinate social programming aimed at our independent-living residents
- Utilize a person-centric approach to activities that acknowledge a resident’s life story and individual preferences
- Document daily attendance, progress notes and departmental observations
- Enhance the lives of residents through a variety of physical, social, cultural and visually-based programs
- Assist and accompany other activities staff on excursions and events with independent residents as required
Does this sound like you?
- May require some lifting over 50 lbs for event set ups and breakdown
- Fitness background is a definite asset.
- Must be able to work well under pressure to deliver on resident expectations
- Must be a team player with a positive “can do” attitude
- 1-2 years’ experience working with older adults an asset
- Proficiency in computer applications, especially Microsoft Publisher, Word & PowerPoint
- Flexible attitude that’s comfortable with changing priorities
- Diploma in Activation / Recreation Therapy or gerontology background is a must
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to deliver under tight deadlines
- Prior knowledge or experience with persons with Dementia / Alzheimer’s an asset
- Must be self-motivated, innovative, work independently, creative, enthusiastic & energetic
What will your working environment be?
- Required to be on site in the Yonge and Eglinton vicinity, walking distance from the subway
- Must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays - no exceptions
